suddenly hard to push...
12/06/13 at 07:05:22
I have a 2011. Great bike. Being as light as it is, I usually push it out of the garage before starting. Lately, with the engine off, in gear, with the clutch disengaged, it is very hard to push - like the rear wheel is "tight". In neutral, no problem - rolls freely. I checked the belt tension and it seems perfect.
The tightness does loosen up after riding for a bit.
Any ideas what could be causing the resistance?
Thanks,
JF

Might just be cold oil... ...but, raise each wheel and check that the brakes aren't dragging...

Why are you pushing it while the bike is in gear? The cold oil and clutch drag is normal......and the thinner oil after the engine is warm is also normal. I would think that it is getting pretty cold up there this time of year......and the harder pushing is probably a result of the oil being colder and thicker than it was in the summer.
Don't pay ay attention to how the bike pushes when in gear with the engine off....it is meaningless.

Thanks everyone! I have been riding later this season than prior years and keep my garage at 12C (54F) so thicker oil makes sense.
Since someone asked, it's 9C (48F) here today. Not for the faint of heart, but a solid riding day for December! We're headed for another green Christmas in Nova Scotia...

I have put Mobil 1 in mine and, although I haven't got it to start yet (!) if really turns over much faster . It is expensive , but 1 can will do 2 oil changes.

My 2011 did the same thing last week and I found that the clutch cable was frayed at the handle bar end and not completely disengaging the clutch when I tried to push it in gear with the clutch in. Before I found the issue it also became harder to shift while riding. Once enough of the cable strands broke it became very hard to start if not neutral.
