Elio enclosed motorcycle
12/01/13 at 12:43:18
This start-up company fascinates me big time.
It's a three-wheeled vehicle that is considered a motorcycle.
They plan on producing them here in the US using
all American made parts.
I was so impressed just had to invested in one.

I was really into the Aptera out of California...and received email updates up until 2012, then they stopped sending them and there is no internet site for them anymore.
Glad I didn't send in the 5g's to help on start-up

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/aptera-hybrid.htm
Found this on Aptera information:
Aptera Motors, Inc. Key Developments
Aptera Motors, Inc. Lays Off 30 of its Employees
Dec 3 2011
Aptera Motors, Inc. is closing after failing to woo enough investors to bring a new sedan to market. Aptera official said the Carlsbad closed its doors on Dec. 2, and laid off all 30 of its employees.

Never heard of the Aptera until you mention it OR.
Looked cool.
I think the Elio has a much better chance at success.
Everything they have done so far has really impressed me.
But I am fully prepared for things to go south in a hurry.

Yeah, the Aptera quoted like 500mpg (equivalent) because of electic motor.
The version I was going to reserve was the electric with a hybrid gas motor (small generator motor) to extend it to 800mpg (equivalent).
But this has a three cylinder motor (not yet built) and either manual or auto tranny (price difference) and two person seating with no trunk space (easily fixed with an overhead rack of some sort).
Also sounds like they still are awaiting some of the laws required to liscense this thing in the US to be passed in some states. So it might be illegal to drive this thing in some states without a helmet even though you have a roof over your head.
I saved the homepage as a "favorite" and "liked" the facebook page.... I am keeping an eye on this company and hope it does not fold like the Aptera one, the wife really does need a new car and she kinda likes this thing.

This has puzzled me... as far as I can tell from their site, they have performance and mileage specs, but haven't even built the engine yet...
"As far as the engine, IAV has designed a great power plant and we will build it in Shreveport, Louisiana."
Specs seem too good to be true...

Here is a mock up the engine thy plan to produce.
It's built by Altair, a supplier of engine parts to 14 major manufactures.
Hopefully by Mid-January 2014 they will have a decent prototype to show the media. Could be a sensation. Like the iPhone.

Yup....seen pictures, but an engine that is not even built yet is theoretical gas mileage... I don't like promises and hypothesis... I kinda like facts.
As with the Aptera, this one has good intentions and in theory will work but I don't see how they can tout 84mpg when the engine is not even built yet.
The model they have now is using a geo metro engine and parts from auto stores... and is supposedly (not tallied yet, their words) 90% American made (that is a good goal).
Like I said i'll keep an eye on it, but will not invest in it just yet.

Yet another competitor in the electric enclosed vehicle race is
http://litmotors.com/c1/
This thing is really cool.... but is going to be costly at first, unless eco-tax breaks knock it down some.
A U-Tube video with engineer describing internals and chipsets ect...

Love the Lit Motors vehicle!
Thanks for sharing, whether these vehicles
ever get off the drawing board or not,
they certainly hold my interest.

I like the lit one also, but those gyro's have to take up a lot of battery juice, and in the video you could hear how noisy they were.
Maybe use a slow retract small wheeled balance leveler system that engages at below 10 mph (there is a company that makes them for motorcycles, I think they are called "stop assist" or "balance assist") so the gyro's could shut down at stops to save energy and maybe freewheel spin for easy stop and goes.
Wrote to lit about it... lets see what the engineers say.

This crazy little Elio concept.
Can not stop feeling upbeat about the whole idea.
Better to have dreamed than to never dream at all.

there are a few of this type already made and used here in the UK. the Grinnell SCorpion for one, they all have two front and one rear wheel Then of course the Morgan , but very expensive (£32,00) and the original of all of them. You used to be able to get a kit to change a Citroen 2CV into one of these, with an open body.
In the UK , ALL 3 wheelers EXCEPT sidecar combos are exempt from helmet wearing laws.

The Morgan is awesome!
One of the things that attracted me to the Elio
was the single seat up front and one behind the driver.
The designer claims that because it is so narrow
it is much more aerodynamic. Pushing less air
results in improved fuel economy.
Plus it seems like flying a fighter jet!
