Anyone driven a modern Royal Enfield?

They look so majestic, almost a work of art rather than a motorcycle. How does it compare to the Savage?

I've been told they are less... as in less reliable, and less powerful..
... but they are more beautiful... and it looks like they have more front brake...

That may be why they fascinate me so. Haven't they been making these for decades? Wouldn't they have the reliable aspect down by now?

They have been making a 500cc single since the 30's- I used to have a '37.

Wow! That is SUH-WEEET! Who needs reliability? Heck, people rode Harleys for years with no guarantees they'd get to the nearest bar just to be seen on one.

I REALLY like the way the tank looks. Anyone know of any way to get the "slant" out of the Savage tank, a retro-fit or something?

It doesn't change it entirely,.. but I added a 1" lift to the rear tank mount (2" to the front end of the seat)... plus 2" oversize shocks...
Kinda' makes a more standard profile...

This has inspired me to add rubber knee pads to my Ryca build.
Check out their website.
They offer a couple varieties.

Thanks for the tank mod! Next time I pull it off I'm doing that. Very nice!

Ragnar, I haven't ridden one yet, but am planning on visiting the local RE shop this week for a look, maybe a ride. We ought to be getting the new Continental GT down under in February. I'm excited.

MMMm my understanding is that the current RE is re-done with a good bit of modern tech. They are still small ( cc-wise) ... but the main complaint I have heard ( here) was that the rear sprocket was attached/integral to the hub. ALso when I last looked there was like ONE official RE importer int he entire US (in Wisconsin).

I posted pics of Kawasaki w 650's. No cam chain, bevel drive from crank to cam. Uses shims, not a lot of valve adjusting.
