What is the best way to check RPM's since there is no tack on the bike?

measure the frequency of the ticks, multiply that by the gear ratio you're currently in and there you have it... the rpm.  simple.   Huh

What? You didnt think that was funny??!!  Versy is one of the guys who knows all the answers,, he is just havin a little fun,,
Once youve played with the bike a while, youll get used to what its sposed to sound like.,.Just make sure the idle stays up to keep that aluminum head & steel cam separated enough by that oil film so you dont ruin the head.

I do believe he's saying he thinks our moderators are doing some recreational drugs and suggesting that he do the same.

Actually, they are saying that it isn't all that hard and if you keep your idle up to a relatively quick idle like this .....

http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1303712067

..... you will be fine.

However, some like pictorial descriptions so we gots that too.

twelveport,

Easy way to tell if your idle is appox correct is to warm up the engine, put the bike in first gear, let out the clutch and take a short ride up the street with the throttle completly closed. If the bike runs along at about 10 mph your idle speed is close enough. A little too fast is better than too slow.

Need a bit of a thick skin around here sometimes. Our idea of humor sometimes is a bit weird Wink

Use an acoustic tach for a smartphone.  All you do is call up the app, hold the phone maybe 10 feet behind the bike while it is idling so the primary noise is coming from the tailpipe.  The write up says it has difficulty with air cooled motors, but that is a problem only if you are close to the motor so the mechanical noise is loud compared to the exhaust noise.

Here's one of the apps available at the moment:

+1 vote for very funny.

Once you are in the lawnmower/sewing machine range then you are doing pretty well. I've been thinking about getting a tach myself but, eh...

At this point I'm now on a mission to find a tach that will work. I was looking at my Dwell/Tach/Voltmeter & I don't think it will work for 1 cylinder. My Craftsman induction timing light....not sure if it has a tach? Anyway, a Tach that would work on single cylinders could be a pretty handy tool in the box. I'm kind of a tool junkie anyway. Beats putting a tack in the tire.......hahahaha.  Wink

OK, after some help from a buddy who is big into dirt bikes, I came up with this. Check it out, hour/tach for under $18.00.
