Engine Knocking! any ideas?

Ok this is my first post so bare with me, I have a 1996 Savage a litlle over 5000 miles on it, that I picked up for free a few years ago, the bike was just sitting I am guessing for about 10 years, had no title but managed to get a bonded title, changed throttle cable, cleaned carb, changed oil and spark plug! To my surpise it fired up then I let it sit for about two years now present day, still runs after another carb cleaning, but noticed a knocking sound in the bottom, first thought was the cam ten. that I have read some much about so pretty much ignored it and installed mac exhuast, now ready to figure out knocking so removed clutch cover to examine cam ten. its was extended 16 to 17mm but not fully extended so is it my source of knocking? Also I noticed the gear behind the clutch (which I believe is the oil pump gear)seems to have slack. Is this normal? I have a sound clip of the knocking but not sure of how to post. O almost forgot I started it yesterday before tearing in to it no knock with choke but after warm up and choke off at idle there it is! Open to any suggestions!

It is hard to help locate a knock that we can't hear. Even when the bike right in front of us some of these things are hard to locate.

My bike started knocking badly with only about 1,000 miles on it. For some reason my left crank bearing had some play, and the flywheel nut was only finger tight. The knocking most likely was from the flywheel being loose and banging on the crankshaft splines. My knock made less noise at higher rpm's....as the crank and flyweel momentum reduced the impact loads at higher speeds.

The cam chain is supposed to make more of a grinding sound than a knock....although I have never heard it in person. My bike measured 15mm when it only had 1,000 miles on it.....so I believe the travel out to 20mm takes a while and at 16-17 you should not yet be in a problem.

Reply #3 - 10/25/13 at 08:16:39 I got a bike with a burned piston that knocked pretty good. The piston melted a bit and collapsed onto the rings locking them in place. I think the knocking was piston slap. Get a mechanics stethoscope and try to isolate where the knocking is coming from.

If you don't have a mechanic's stethoscope, stick a screwdriver on various parts and your ear on the handle and see if you can narrow down the location of the noise.

Reply #9 - 10/25/13 at 10:50:58 Low idle does make since, cause after the mac muffler install it dropped the idle even slower I will slap it back together, next week after I get the cam ten. mod done or bought, and try raising it a bit, I havent played with the carb adjustments any because its coming off anyways for a lancer carb kit I have
