Seeking ideas...
10/08/13 at 23:53:11

My original title for this thread was...
"Man, seeking firm 10", preferably black"... (I thought better of it) Huh...
(almost too funny to pass up... ...Almost)...
Ahem!...

I've rigged a tailbag for my Sporty... I didn't want to scratch anything, so I bent up this bicycle bottle rack to support a bag over the rear fender, and I currently have two slats of bamboo venetian blinds riveted inside the bag for support... which I then covered with a Peter Piper Pizza box lid... (you know your idea sucks, when a cardboard Pizza box lid helps)...
.... so,.. this is a temporary solution (I always start with sucky solutions, because I think as I go)...

So,... I'm looking for a material 10" wide, by about 10"... that is firm enough to retain a few rivets... but flexible enough to be curved or bent to shape the inside of my bag...
I would prefer black, to match the bag...
I recall some black reenforcing material in a saddlebag that would be perfect...  ... but, I want something cheap...
Milk carton cheap... but a bit stronger,... and black...

I'll add some pics tomorrow....(skeeters was eating me alive just as I was making final fitting of my Frankenbag)...

Any ideas?... Huh...

Sometimes old book bags or suitcases have black plastic reinforcing panels in them. My kids are constantly getting new ones, just a thought.

Go to the craft shop (JoAnn's, etc) They have all kinds of stuff that probably would work.
Here's a piece of needlework canvas, may or may not hold a rivet, but maybe a zip tie?  I'm pretty sure these come in colors.  $1.49, cheaper than a gallon of milk...  lol

+1 to BabyHog- Joanne's, Michael's, Hobby Lobby or any such craft/hobby store will have lots of materials that will fit your needs on the cheap. Too bad you aren't near by I just acquired some aluminum from a sign display that would work perfectly  Huh

Those plastic signs on wire supports that people stick along side the road work great for some things.  They come in many colors and they have two flat faces with a center core of vertical holes.  When people stick them in my yard without asking....I repurpose them to hold nuts, bolts and small parts while I spray paint them, or for liners in cardboard boxes I am mailing and need some reinforcement and padding, or put them on my work bench when I am using paint stripper on a part.

For riveting stuff to canvas or any other cloth-like material always use some small washers under your crimp side (if your rivet pack didn't come with them), it will help hold the rivet crimp side from pulling through.

I also saw that 3M makes some kind of a spray on chip guard that you can just peel off when you are done with it.  That could work to protect the fender if you did attach a bag that rested on the fender.

My first thought was about the commercial with the camel walking through the office asking what day it is...  Happier than a camel on hump day!  And today just so happens to be Hump Day!   Grin

Hey Bot, did you say this thing is going inside the bag?  (thinking why does color matter if it goes inside....)

What day is garbage pickup in your neighborhood?  I could find all kinds of stuff laying by the neighbors trash when they put it out on the curb for pickup...  (know a guy that used to leave his house half an hour early on trash day, just so he could drive slow past everybody else's garbage)

Ok  First off, I admit that I sam not a putterer, nor an inventor, like most of the people on this site.  But, for my taste, I think that a Sporty looks a lot more together, and has a lot more carrying capacity with a set of Leatherlike side cases, than it does with a lot of different bags mounted everywhere.  Of course, I know that Bot likes to play, so he should do what he likes with his bike.  It more or less keeps him out of trouble.
