I rode my bike today. Not hard, but enough to warm it up, 3 miles maybe... I can hear my valves a tap tap taping away so I am going to adjust them... Three questions:

Is the o ring on the access reusable...

Is a tap of some sort a feature of Suzuki savages?

What is the over all effect of riding with tapping valves?

Oh, and a fourth and final question do all savages backfire when turned off?

Some valve tapping is better than none (adjusted too tight).

Savage valve train noise is nothing compared to the non-desmo Ducati 250 of my youth. That thing really clacked. Large fins on the head and cylinder just magnified every little sound. I ran a loud muffler just so I didn't have to listen to all the racket.

Go to you tube and type in 650 savage or Suzuki s40 and listen to how they run. There are some on there that are louder than my wife's!! I also thought the savage was too loud (I was used to my 1300 Honda vtwin).
After doing the you tube listening sessions come back and tell us how yours compares.

I found another video that seemed to have zero tick. Seems like too tight vs lose would be worse... So what are the consiquenses of riding with some valve noise until I have time to adjust them?

That ain't valve tap... under those conditions it's called engine knock or spark knock... and it means you are lugging the engine... (engine knock is a much bigger sound, not small metal parts clicking, but explosions happening at the wrong time, trying the make the piston go backward)...(too much fuel is going into the cylinder while it is turning at too low a speed)...
It ain't good for the engine to do that, so downshifting is the correct thing to do...
That's the same sound you get if you have a high compression engine and run low octane gas... but, using premium won't help with lugging an engine... just don't lug it...
...downshift... Wink

... (try to avoid ever making that sound, by never having the engine in too high of a gear at too low of a speed)...

You "inspect"/measure valve tolerances at intervals..(4 to 6k miles)... (what you are measuring is the gap between the top of each valve stem and the rocker arm that pushes it down)...
you adjust,.. only when measuring them shows they need it...
When they are not within tolerance...
