2006 S40 value.

Hello all,

I hope I have this in the right Forum.

My local Suzuki dealer has a used 2006 S40 for sale. Basic configuration. No bags, no windscreen.

It has 25,000 miles on it.

It has no damage to it, and no fluid leaks of any kind.

It has brand new tires on it.

The only 'problem' with it is the black factory paint is scuffed up, like the previous owner got overzealous with the washing of it.

It runs perfectly, and he wants $1600 for it.

I already have one, but would like another for a couple of reasons. Is this one a good deal at $1600?

Depends a lot on location,... and from a dealer they'll be getting a premium... plus, you'll probably have sales tax...
$1600 is top dollar,.. but if it's a good one with mostly highway miles, it could be okay...
Here,.. I'd be looking for a private seller, and under $1200... (if I were buying to resell, I'd be looking under $900 to sell at $1400 to $1600)...

PS.. that bike is very much due for a new cam chain, or modded adjuster...

Plus.......25,000 miles seems kind of high. Last year I gave $1500 for my 1996,BUT it only had 8400 miles on it. Even from a dealer(who is looking for the very top dollar) I'd pay $1250 at the most. And make the dealer throw in the new cam chain repair before I agreed to the $1250.

JC that's the direction my thoughts were going. And I figure a dealer DOES know the cam chain is ready to fail at that milage so if he sells in good faith he will admit that. Therefore he should be willing to make the repair. If he does not aknowledge this he is either not honest or not up to par in his service department.

Once they clear either projected life span figure, unless they are a smoking hot high demand custom starting point (like a Z1-900 or a fuelie KZ1000/1100), metrics are worth no more than $1/cc.

Okay, so I really miss the days of common sense bike prices. But the one in question is badly overpriced.

Well, after thinking about it, and reading all of your comments, I think I will pass on this particular S40.

It does have ALOT of miles on it, and I don't really want to mess with repairs on something I just bought!

I will continue to enjoy the one I have, and if another one pops up somewhere for a good price with (way) less miles, I'll get that one.

Thank you SO much everyone. If it were not for this Forum, I probably would have run down there tomorrow and bought the thing!

If you find one in showroom for $1600 from a dealer, make sure you get a guarantee for 90 days or more and a mechanical decree saying it is in top shape with no problems.

Anything 10 years or older is likely going to have 10,000 + miles on it, unless you find one that was left in the garage because it had a mechanical issue the rider couldn't fix. OR.....they didn't ride in cold weather, you kinda have to play it by ear when you go and look at it to see what the owner knows about the mechanics of the bike.

But a dealer will know, and will take you to the cleaners, so get a guarantee or a warrantee for at least 3 to 6 months.

. LS650 was only available for 1 year (86) and nobody bought them. So they're really uncommon here. Plus, old bikes, they just keep getting dearer. I remember pulling a 750/4 K1 out of the dump years ago and swapping it for a trailer. Not no more...The retro shops (Deus etc) are importing SR400 and 500 and selling them for $6000+, stone stock. There's just no CHEAP worthwhile bikes here anymore.
I had to pay $3500 for my '86 with 32000 km on it. I'll get 5500, 6000 if I go to sell it now. I'd love to bring a crate of them over, at $650 ea. You got it so good....

In NY, where I live, they are $3500 for the same bike.

I think 1600 is a fine deal..

I sold my 2005 w/ dented tank/20,000 miles ,welds on the pipe, $2,500.
It does have a Supertrapp & Stage 1 Cam, so,, I think the guy got a real deal.
$1,600 for an 06? Id do it,, even with the miles,, IF its a dealership, then Id wrangle a cam chain into the deal. Maybe buy the part, they provide the labor,,

Still learning I guess. I would have thought, a newer bike at a dealership for $1600, isn't a bad deal. I paid $1950 for a 2003. Of course it only had 475 miles on it.

Your best deals will be about January ( around here). Christmas is over, its cold and wet out... people are ready to unload the bike and pay for Christmas bills. Winter blues. By April - March the prices start their spring time rise and stay strong up to October. Cycle repeats. A patient guy could probably make some change if he had a place to get and store the bikes.

To me, a running bike always has some value ( no not $1 per cc). Though areas have different acceptance of bikes. A clean running ninja 250 is always worth at least a full months welfare check. A clean running HD is always worth a months retirement check. Grin

Central MS is not full of Savages ( though there are some), so generally either guys think they are a neat almost motorbike, or dismiss them completely.

Reply #14 - 10/07/13 at 11:56:54 I don't know how bad that is, I don't think it would have been horrible had they don't the services, but I think you can find a better deal, mostly with lower miles. I paid 3000 including tax etc. through a dealer for my 2009 with 1800 on it. I was pretty much emaculate except a scratch on the side of the tank.
