If a national park sits within a state's border, can't the state keep it open if they want to spend the money?
Doesn't this prove we have too much federal intervention in our lives?
Probably boils down to jurisdiction/ownership.
Its been reported that the national parks service(NPS) has been TOLD to make the shutdown as painful and obvious as possible. And apparently, its really causing some NPS staffers to reconsider their careers. Several have stepped up to say that pressure is being put on them from Washington, to make this hurt.
I strongly suspect, that such power-plays fall along party NPS higher ups. Here in Mississippi, parks were closed, but no bone-headed crap has come of it. Why? Mississippi is mostly a republican state, and so Washington, would be leery of demanding they play along with the political game. Would be interesting to see how park closings worked out on a red/blue map.
Don't get me wrong, the pug, congress started the game... the dems are just milking it. As far as I can tell both parties are VERY HAPPY with the shutdown as long as it makes their party out the winner(or conversely - not the loser). Once public opinion shifts largely one way or the other, that's when the game ends. However, I am loving the news reports, showing folks just hating on congress.. regardless of party! Party politics seems blind to this. So far "if its bad for them is good for us" it their mantra... what they fail to see... its bad for BOTH parties.
... AND I am very good with that!
