Ideas for attaching moldings to the tank.

I am having my tank chromed and want to attach knee pads and retro Suzuki tank badges to it. The knee pads I put on the tank I have now were attached with body molding tape, which pulled away from the pads a bit where they curve over the top. I can't find body molding tape in sheets. The Boulevard badges were put on with something that looked like putty.
Any advice?

Go to a BodyShop supply house. A paint store that sells automotive paints.
Ask for the latest in sticking moldings back on. I know 3M has a product thats so good they put the sheathing on a skyscraper with it. In UL testing it was compared to rivets,, Its also just a bit spendy,, like several bucks a foot. But adhesive technology is far advanced since the 70's, when we used a double sided tape. That stuff lasted for years,.,

Yep, and the carpet runners also work fine. You might also be able to use tank pads from early Honda, Triumph, etc. - but you will most likely have to grind some rubber off the back for whatever attachment method was used on the stock tank......so you can have a flat surface to glue to the tank. Most of the contact cement type products are rubbery and require you to apply the adhesive to both surfaces prior to mounting, and you can peel or rub off any adhesive that might extend out from the edges of the pad.

Contact Adhesive, 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive and similar products should work - the important thing is to use an adhesive that does not soften when the black rubber pad gets hot in sunlight.

You might also be able to use the foam tape that is used to mount badges and molding on automobiles.
