OUT WITH A BANG!
09/22/13 at 17:54:24

Greetings gents! Hope everyone had a great weekend. Perfect riding weather in the northeast!

Our savage has a violent backfire issue. Only when she gets shut off.
Sometimes it's a little "poof" sound, if riding hard or for a long distance it's more of a gunshot "POP!" sound. The little "poof" is cute and we can count the 2 seconds after shutoff and know exactly when it's coming. But... the "POP!" scares the crap out of the neighbors. I'm sure they think there has been a shooting or something.

We don't have the pops during deceleration that i read about, but we have learned to decelerate and shift the way that the bike wants us to.

I bought a dyna muffler and plan on doing the swap this winter.

Does anyone know if that will solve the loud backfire, or is there anything else to adjust in the meantime? (The simple answer is never turn the bike off. Ha)

Lowering the idle knob helps a lot, but to go low enough to stop the shutoff backfires, the engine does not sound happy at that idle, so we don't do it.

Many thanks!

The new muffler may help... and farting around with jetting and idle can help...
... but first,... make sure your idle is up high enough... (it should purr like a kitten, not lope like a Harley).. too low, is not good for oil pressure, and may cause head damage...
...second,... try just letting it idle for 10 or 20 seconds before you shut off.. ( you can also try killing the engine by dropping the clutch while in gear and holding the front brake... that will prevent that final cycle of gas being drawn into the pipe unburned)...

Some singel engine has shut off solenoid just for this reason. Cuts off fuel when you stop engine. Old VW has it Smiley

There are a lot of engines that have the cut off switch.  A lot of air cooled mower engines, generators, the VW beetles, etc.  All engines without the fuel shut off on the carbs pump unburned fuel and air into the exhaust when the ignition is shut off....and if the exhaust is hot the unburned fuel can be ignited.  I can remember having a garden tractor that would "poof" after I shut it off, and sometimes my push mower will do it as well.

Well given you have 21 posts, I assume you have been around and poked about abit.

Here is what works for me:
Make sure the exhaust pipe is tight. These tend to loosen as one rides, so its an ongoing effort. Do not over tighten.

Make sure the muffle is tight.

When shutting down:
Put in neutral
position the right thumb to use the kill switch
with the left hand reach down and slowly extend the "choke" knob

The bike will "stumble" and the rpms will momentarily drop, at that point flip the kill switch.

This works for me 99% of the time, at worst I soft "poof".

Be sure to put the bike in gear before leaving it.

Easy.

1. Pull in clutch and come to a full stop in 1st gear
2. Apply front brake
3. Slowly let out clutch until bike dies

Presto...no more bang

My FormerSavage must be jetted about right,,Sounds great, no backfires between gears, grumbles coasting down, & when shut off it waits a coupla secs & lets out a low poof,, doesnt even sound like a backfire, more along the lines of a dog fart,
