Riding in the rain, Suzy don't like it.
09/12/13 at 17:20:53

Yesterday was the first time I've ridden my Savage in the rain. Really teeming rain. I don't like it, and it seems the Suzy doesn't either. About 5 min into the ride it started running rough, stalling at lights. At wider than 1/2 throttle opening it was ok. I'm kinda surprised, and thought it would be untroubled by rain. Today the sun's back out and the bike runs as good as gold. Isolated incident or is it a Savage thing?

I don't have a rear fender or an air box and I've riden in the raid before. My bike sucks up a lot of water but it won't do any harm. If anything it gives it a nice little internal cleaning. Also when I had the stock carb on the bike I'd have to give it a quick cleaning but if your bikes running fine after it dried out I would say you are golden.

I live in Tampa the Lightning Capital of the world and during the summer you can set your watch to the afternoon thunderstorms we have.  I ride in the rain almost everyday and my bike has never cutout.  I would look for a leak in the airbox or water getting around the ignition or spark plug.

I bit of water was likely getting into your airbox ... I got caught in a torrential downpour on my Shadow Spirit (dual carb model) last Sunday and was pleasantly surprized at how well she handled the adverse conditions ... but then again I was only on the road a 1/2 hr. or so ...

Start sealing up the wiring connections. The decompression relay is neither water tight, or in a good location. Combination of salty air (from 2/98-7/99), southern humidity (from 7/99-10/01) and Pacific Northwest dampness (from 10/01 until it rotted away by 2007) destroyed the relay guts, amongst other electrical parts. Bike was retired for a full overhaul of aesthetics and electrical harness/switches in 2010. Is still in pieces. It ate 3 batteries in under a year.

It will get its final prognosis next week. Odds are, it is a parts roach... I don't mind riding in the rain. But I'd rather have a Vulcan or a Shadow for inclement weather, they are much more water resistant.

Stock airbox and filter on mine. I just took the filter out for a look this morning, doesn't look like any water has been in there. I might get some silicone spray to give the wiring joiners a going over.

I was out riding my stock Savage yesterday and got caught in rain, I
was prepared for it and stopped to put on my rain gear. The bike ran
fine, I think your problem has to do with your bike. I wish I could tell
you what to check but I've never had a problem with rain, other than getting wet!

My short rear fender gives me a skunk stripe,.. but that's okay, 'cause it just makes my back match my front anyway...

giz,

If the problem is electrical in nature, you may be able to chase it down thusly:

Grab you a spray bottle and fill it with water.  Get the bike running.  Carefully spray water on various suspicious electrical components.

If the engine stumbles or quits, you've found your huckleberry.....

I heard a lot about this...but my little Savy until "showed teeth" ... Smiley
somebody says you need to check the condition of the spark plug cap, and someone says something that is out of order ignition coil.... I have encountered so far only with the problem of "wet-air filter"... check its status/replace on new...and check the condition of the spark plugs and wires....
