C50

What are your thoughts on the C50?  I'm thinking of letting my wife ride my S40 and getting me a C50.. there is one for sale around here.. just seeing what are some big differences (aside from the weight and cc of course).

Believe they are Fuel Injected and liquid cooled?

04' and earlier it was called the Volusia and was carbureted...  Much less complicated and better running...
The injected models are notoriously expensive and difficult to work on...

I know lots of people have them and like them,.. I just wouldn't want to have an injection problem...

Other than they are electrical nightmares when something goes wrong, they are okay bikes. Typical Suzuki build quality, so the seat is terrible, the brakes are atrocious, and the fuel economy is livable (Harley Big Twins do better) at best.

They are a lot better than their parent bike, they evolved from the 800 Intruder, which was the biggest piece of crap Japanese cartoon V-twin ever foisted off on an unsuspecting buying public...

If it looks fine and it fits, give it a try. I would have pulled the trigger on a left over light blue and white C50T about 4 years ago if I'd had the ready cash.

I've heard injection bikes carry pretty hefty price tag... from the ad it has 21000 miles (ALOT in my mind), recent "tune up" with radiator flush and oil change, Cobra pipes, new tires.. didn't say what year..

Another option is 99 Harley Sportster that a friend of a friend of mine is selling.. he's saying $3000.. I know that has a carb.. he claims (i would need to see paperwork) fliuds flushed out, new battery, and Vans Hines pipes..

Thoughts?

I transitioned from a 2007 S40 to a 2007 C50 this spring. All years are liquid cooled. The 2005 and later are fuel injected and have floor boards instead of pegs and a heel/toe shifter. The best thing about the C50 and M50 is that you get a lot of bike for the bucks. Low mileage deals are out there so be patient. Tons of aftermarket parts and accessories are available compared to the S40.

The C50 feels very light on its feet and seems more nimble to me than the S40. The wider bars and a rear suspension that actually works help a lot. I am getting about 48MPG and can sneak into the low 50's if I putt along. Oh, and the 4.1 gallon tank with a fuel gauge is appreciated. There is plenty of power for solo and 2-up riding. It does run out of zip after about 70mph and you end up looking for a sixth gear. But. unless you are looking for a Interstate cruiser, you will be fine. I had no issues solo with luggage keeping up with the Interstate traffic.

Check out their forum www.volusiariders.com. There are several former Savage owners over there. There does not seem to be a history of any fuel injector or electrical issues. The bike seems to be pretty solid. Valve adjustment is best left for patient people and the drive shaft lubrication (not a straight line, kids) needs to be checked.

I put 5,000 miles on the S40 last year and 4,000 on the C50 so far. I have taken both on extended trips. Although I miss the S40, I strongly prefer the C50.

Awesome write-up thanks!

Valve adjustment is best left for patient people and the drive shaft lubrication check.. can that be done with minimal expeirence or should I have a shop check it out?

It looks like a 2005 or 2006. It has floor boards but, if I am seeing this correctly, the brake line seems to connect to the brake master cylinder on the side. In 2007 and later models, the brake hose connected to the bottom of the master cylinder.

The technical section on their web site has very good step by step instructions with pictures for both the valve adjustment and shaft drive lubrication. If you have a bike lift and the tools, you should be fine. I pulled the final drive and checked the shaft lube (again, not a straight line for all the comedians out there) without any issues. I pulled the tank and took a hard look at the space that was available to adjust the valves. I am absolutely no good working with those tight clearances so will be taking to the dealer for the valves. Oil, oil filter, and coolant changes are dead simple although you do need to slide the tank back to get to the radiator cap.

You said it had 21,000 miles. That is really not to bad. There is one member on their forum who had a C50 engine grenade on him at 38,000 miles. He is rather vocal about it. other members report 60,000 to 80,000 miles without an issue.

LOL. I just noticed you are in Hawaii. Forget everything I said about Interstate cruising. This is me in July heading out for a 1,500 mile road trip.

Thanks again!  Looking good!

Yeah I won't be able to work on that myself.  I'll have a local mechanic check it out.

Lol yea not much of interstate riding here.. I just use it for going back and forth to work (espeically with gas prices here at 4.25 for regular..).  S40 is getting me back and forth without issues but my wife wants to start riding.. figures lol

I'll check out the other forum.. thanks!

Also check at www.IntruderAlert.com they are THE source for all flavors of Intruders. At heart the Marauder/M50 and Volusia/C50 are Intruders. As is the old VX800 standard. The C90 variants are reworked LC1500s, the M90/Marauder 1500 are rebadged Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 Mean Streaks with ugly headlights.

The M109 is a bored and stroked rebadged Kawasaki as well.

I love my 2009 C50. I got it as a leftover. The salesman said he had a few of them in the warehouse still in the crate. Sold it to me for $5000. Since I got it I've added a set of cobra pipes, mustang seat with cobra backrest and luggage rack, saddlemen hard leather bags, and windshield.
I kept the S40 for two summers after I bought the C50 but I didn't use it enough to hang on to it. Now I only have the C50 and it get plenty of use. About 52 mpg putting around town. Check to see if the local Suzuki dealer has any leftovers. +1 on volusiariders.com

Factory spec turning radius for the S40 is 2.6m. The C50 spec is 3.0m. If you get a chance to ride the C50, you will be pleased how nimble it feels.

I have sat on the C50, M50 and an older S50 and I like the way the S50 feels.

Does anyone have an opinion on the S50?

I have put about 15000 miles on my injected 08 since I got it. As far as gas mileage goes, If I am out by myself I get 40 to 45. If the wife is riding with me (she has the s40 now) then i get 50.
