Oxidation??
09/08/13 at 19:54:02

Another neewb question.. Is this oxidation!? Or something else? It's only on the chrome parts. Looks like its cracking almost... I've gotten 3 different things for oxidation and none worked.

It's probably the poor quality lacquer over the polished aluminium alloy bits breaking down and you will get oxidation underneath. Probably the only permanent fix would be to remove all the lacquer and repolish and relacquer with a better quality thicker lacquer. If you want to go crazy, pull it all to bits and [powder coat or paint the offending bits. I don't think the effort is worth this.

Here's a riddle for you:  What's white and powdery and aluminum all over?

?

?

Aluminum oxide!  Yup, it's probably sitting under your lacquer just getting worse. If you remove the lacquer then you'll either have to re-lacquer it or give it a frequent, thorough rub down to keep it clean.

On the other hand, it almost looks like mineral deposits.  Do you keep your bike outside at all?  Could it have been sprayed by a hose or something?  Might try some Vinegar or CLR and see if that gets rid of it.  I doubt it, but it's worth a shot.
