Wow! Amazing that he was able to get himself off the road. Must have been pure instinct. I've heard it said that when sh*t happens you revert to your training and operate on automatic. I'll bet this guy has been riding for a long time. And whatever good luck charm he carries in his pocket, he better hang on to it!

When the motorcyclist pulled off his helmet, the hair on the right side of his head was singed and his ear appeared blackened.

Amazing..

I have always been led to believe that lightning won't hit a vehicle because of the insulating properties of the tires. The only thing I can think of is that the water film on the tires was enough to allow a limited discharge of lightning from the ground to the wet atmosphere through his helmet which is also an insulator. Limited conduction resulted in limited damage.

My thinking is that the lightning strike was going to hit that point in the road and the rider just happened to cross the 'hit spot' at the most inopportune moment.

The water is probably what saved him.  path of least resistance was through the water on his clothes rather than the water in his body.

That is sooo true. I've seen lighting strike a small pine tree and jump a foot over to a fence post and blow the fence post apart jumping back to the tree!

We were partying at a friends house and got run into the house by a rain storm, three of use watched it happen, we were all about blind for 30 minutes after.

The tree roots were turned into glassy chunks of sap...when we dug up the old fence post and put in a new one.

I saw Park Ranger on TV that had been struck by lightning 6 times. Each time he was sitting in his truck.
