Two up on 2006 S40
09/04/13 at 08:15:31

Friend of mine asked me to go on a 2 day trip around Iowa on bikes, with wives. He has Honda Shadow VT110 and he's ok with two up. I wonder if my S40 is capable of doing something like that? I'm 240lbs and wife 150lbs. The trip is around 700 miles.

You won't have any problems with power, but you will be pushing the recommended weight limit for the bike, especially if you add any luggage. And I strongly suspect your wife will not be happy with the passenger seat. Take her for a ride before you set out, and see how things work out.

My wife and I did not explore the weight limits much....I am 160 and she is about 140.  She did not like to ride on the bike much as we were both about the same height when seated and all she ever saw was the back of my helmet unless she was leaning out one side.  She would not have enjoyed 700 miles on the Savage.

We already tried few hour-hour and a half rides and it went well. I believe the rhythm would be on the beginning 1.5 hrs of riding 20-30 min pause. Later on the day pause each hour of riding...
Yes, it will be tough on her but my concern is more about the bike. Is it ok, adventurous or stupid to do and the engine will die for sure. Smiley

The bike can do it. The question is if you and the good wife can do it. 700 miles in two days is a lot of hours on that little saddle. +1 with what Charon said. Do a 150 mile dry run with luggage and then decide if you can do 300 plus miles in a day.

keep us posted

I'm 210 and she is 160 we manage but it is cramped.  We've only done little trips although.  Take a small trip first to try it out and set your rear springs up if they're not already set on max preload

While many complain about the short fuel range, you might find it a blessing. It will give you an excellent reason to stop every couple of hours. Fill the bike, empty yourself, stroll around, and proceed.

Way back when my wife decided she wanted to go for a ride on the S40, we didn't get ten miles before the small passenger seat got to her and she said "Take me home."

So, conclusion
- Bike is ok with two-up for the trip and no damage to bike.
- The main, eventually the only concern is about the passenger's comfort.

Quick way to end up in divorce proceedings... the passenger accommodations are relics from the Inquisition. The rider seat is merely terrible for more than about 100 miles in a day as shipped. If you have a tall passenger backrest, it helps, a lot. And then use the wife as your backrest.

Lisa and I did a Long Beach MS to Baton Rouge LA weekend trip. Well in excess of the bike's weight capacity... was supposed to be a day trip, but the seating was so miserable we got a hotel for the night, ground floor room so the bike could be inside.

You might want to look carefully at the spring preload adjuster. The highest notch preloads the spring least. As you turn it toward lower notches, the adjuster moves upward on the indexing peg and compresses (preloads) the spring more.
