Want to Bob my 09 s40
09/02/13 at 10:37:03

So Long story short, I have an 09 s40 and want to bob it. I really have no clue where to even start really. I was assuming seat and rear fender. Is it best to due a Ryca Bob kid or a bluecollar bobbers kit. Or should I try and find the parts else where and do everything on my own?
Secondly I want a bobber but I also want to try and fashion some big ammo cans (deeper than 50 cal cans) into hard bags. Considering the bags normally mount to the rear fender and with a shorter fender do any of you have opinions on how I could accomplish the mounting for hard bags?

Basically any advice on how to bob this bike out would be appreciated.

Thanks

I'm guessing that you mostly just want to make your bike really low in the back?...

To me,.. "bobbing a bike, is reducing it to it's minimal complication and weight,... so, adding giant steel bags is kinda' antithetical to bobbing it...

I think you can lower it, by finding shorter shocks or hardtailing it with solid struts,.. but you will probably need a pretty sturdy fender to support the weight of those bags... so a tiny "bobber" type fender might not be in the cards...
Hacking on the stock fender is possible but it tends to look a bit ratty...
Side mounting the license plate can visually reduce the size of the rear fender...
Maybe start there?... Huh...

Ohhh!... and lose those chrome head covers... (I hate those things!)... Grin...

Yeah, I understand what your are saying so perhaps i should have said. I want a minimalist looking bike with the exception of hard ammo can bags haha.

Yeah I really want the short fender and at a mimimum a single seat so I'm not sure what I will do. hmm

If you go with a hard tail... you could mount the ammo cans right to the struts / frame on the sides of the rear wheel.

That will keep the fender out of the equation and let you go with whatever size you like.

Looking at the hardtail option from ryca, it would probably be easier to work with, and offer more mounting options, over adding struts to the stock setup.

This is exactly the look I want to go with. Still softtail but with the ammo cans. I would probably want 20mm so they are a little bigger though.

20mm cannon shell cans dwarf Knuckle/Pan/Shovel FL rear fenders. You may not want to run them on a mini-bike like the LS650/S40.

Even standard sized Saddleman Desperado semi rigid bags are too large for a stone stock Savage, let alone a cut down. I use them on my 98, which runs an FL solid rear fender...

...yes, the chrome sidemount headlight adapter is the rear fender primary mount.

... it is very easy to go overboard on your bag size, even wiih the full rear fender, this is about the max you want to run. And yes, the fishtail pipe IS the secondary rear fender mount, via a VN800 rear reflector bracket.

Solo seat is long gone, it sucked. Dixie brand from Jireh or Fog Hollow, or Canyon Run (same company, different brothers running different divisions, kind of like Lowes and Home Depot)...  Roll Eyes

Mounting bags to the swing arm increases unsprung weight. Imagine what happens inside there. Not a place for  a 6 pakk..

Hotrodbobber,
Do you find that you scrape those containers? I would like to set something like that up but I scrape my pegs more often than my wife would like and I don't want to scrape anything else.
