Experienced Rider Course
08/29/13 at 19:52:05
Anyone done it before? I'm going tomorrow from 8-4. Read the info online and it says half day course with few discussions, how to inspect, etc. Just want to get some personal experience from others. Thanks!

When I last toolkit, and it has been a decade or so ago, it was the same class given to the Cal HP. It was a two day class, with the first day focusing on standard riding skills, only at higher speeds. The second day was almost all accident avoidance-emergency stops, riding the bike down with a locked rear wheel, skid pad work, etc. It was scary, but I learned a lot. (None of which helped with my last accident.) Still, it was well worth the time.

Where did you find ERC on island? I need to take another course soon to maintain my insurance discount.

I did take the class recently only ours ran from 9 AM until about 6PM. I have some suggestions for you. Take a long sleeve shirt, they want your arms covered. Some only brought riding jackets and they got really warm after hours out on the hot asphalt. I took both a jacket and a shirt because it was a little cool in the morning and used just the shirt in the afternoon.
Take some bottled water and some snacks. It is a long day and they didn't really give us enough time to go out for lunch. By the time we got to a fast food place it was time to turn around and go back.
Take some sun screen.
They are serious about the requirements for boots and gloves etc. I bought some new comfortable mesh gloves for the class and was glad I had them. They made everyone lift up their pants cuffs so they could check to see that the ankles were covered by the boots.
The class itself is pretty basic. At one point they marked off a little race track style circuit and had us ride around in small groups, that was the most fun.
Have fun.

Been here for an hour.. Break time.. Not much different from basic course so far. Think we're easing into it? We did quick stops, weaving, slow maneuvers... Well see what they have after break.

Did some u turns, cornering, and now we have 2 more drills and that's it. I thought it would cover more advanced techniques and stuff. But oh well least it was free.

All in all fairly good course. They should just title it "Refresher". But the circuit exercise at the end was the best part. At least it gave me confidence riding a cruiser since I'm new to it. They told me the sport bike course is a lot of leaning through the corners and high speed maneuvers.

Thanks for the summation, it's always good to keep up on your skills. I've been thinking about doing a power braking session in a parking lot some time soon
