All the same,... Cal. models will have an internal rubber stopper blocking the cap vent...

Would the CA rubber stopper versions prevent leakage, then?  I have found a couple times when I top up my gas (perhaps I'm overfilling) that when I tip my bike back up vertically some gas streams out of the tank and down the side of my bike.

Mine started leaking(streaming) when the tank is full(recommended level) when it was just a few months old. It doesn't do it most of the time, and I'm more careful now, but it is a pain. I'll see if a new gasket will help.

I have found that if I push down firmly when installing the gap that mine doesn't leak at all.

....and if you don't remove it the tankof a non Cal bike won't vent and the bike will not run for very long.

I've had that problem and found the same thing that PhantomII did.  If I push it down well when reinstalling it, no leak.  Just pop it down, it usually will leak.

Same here. Mine only leaks if I fill it above the bottom of the tube. But dang it's hard to see that level sometimes.

Hmmm, don't know. But I do know that my 94 VS800 fits the savage and the savage cap fits the VS800 tank. Pics are in the link below.
