Jen, the front brakes are a snap to change out.
I did mine all by myself.
The tech section here along with all the guys help
can get you thru anything you need to do to this bike.

Now of course if we could get some of the guys to have
a wrenching session here in Wa. That would be great too..

Now about comparison to a Rebel, well I rode a Rebel for
2 years before buying my S-40 brand new in 09.
The S-40 is heavier and has more get up and go
than the Rebel has.
I noticed that right off the bat.
Their is bound to be some weight difference between your Harley
and the S-40 as the HD is heavier.
I think if you give it a chance you will love it like I do and the others
here love theirs..
Best of luck and I am over by Bremerton, Shelton area.. Welcome aboard.. Smiley kim

I actually like the S40 more than my Sportster because I'm not paranoid about the weightof the S40 like I am of the Harley. I don't have the feeling that if it leans a little that it will fall over.

Anyway, got the bike inspected and the Suzuki dealer said:
(1) don't expect anything, it's a cheap bike and this is as good as it is going to run

The front and rear brakes squeel when you stop and the bike backfires whenever you let off of the throttle. Is this nomal for this bike?? I really like it and wish it wouldn't do these things.

Hi, Jen, and welcome to the board.

My fronts never squeal. The back only squeals the first and sometimes the second time they are applied that day. Both brakes work great.

I'll grant them that it's a cheap bike.  But, it will run great.  It should run as smooth as any other bike.  The old style dog gearbox is a bit clunky when changing but the engine stumbling, stuttering, etc. is not normal. It should willingly pull just as hard as you want when you get back on the throttle.

The backfiring can be mitigated to a certain extent.  Go here http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1181745927 and scroll down to the section on backfiring.

Hope this helps you out.  Enjoy your new bikes, whichever you decide to ride.

There are a few fixes for the brakes, but the sure fire fix are pads with kevlar.
tuning a carb is a fine art and so is operating one.
a little higher idle speed may help or simply not letting the throttle snap shut.

If it feels like a Rebel,... somethings wrong...
It should feel like something right in between your 1200 Sporty and a Rebel...
0 to 60mph.... it should not disappoint...

You most likely have some clogging in the carb...

Having gone thru the same learning curve as you are now... I can control when my bike "barks" and my brakes are fine. The bike runs great and the "Collective wisdom of the group" has kept me away from the shops except for Safety Inspections. I am recently back after having to park the bike for awhile, life happens. So if your interested in wrenching on your bike, this forum will be your new best friend.
Welcome and Good Luck.

I brought the bike to Suzuki and got new front brakes, the EBC organic. My brake squeal is totally gone. I am having a great time with the bike, so much that the Sportster just sits in the garage.
