OEM Fuel Tank Color and Fit Question
08/15/13 at 14:18:24

When I found a 2009 S40 with low miles for the right price I jumped on it.  The only downside for me was really one of the superficial: the color.  It's that lipstick pink color they called "candy red" in 2009.  I really don't love it.  But I realized I could repaint my 2009 for not too much.

But here in Denver I'm finding that painting a bike ain't cheap!  Even MAACO quoted me at "between 1,000 to 1,500!"

Now I'm realizing for far less I could buy OEM replacement parts.  It's only 5 pieces of metal: 2 fenders, fuel tank, and 2 small side panels.  And to make things even cheaper, I'd still have a whole set of the red/white parts to put up on eBay and recoup at least half of the cost back.  Plus I don't have to leave my bike somewhere for 7-10 days while they paint it.  It's a no brainer.

So my question is will 2011 S40 parts fit a 2009?

Because if so, I could order the silver/white dual tone paint job that I loved so much.  That'd make me happy.  Partzilla seems to have them in abundance.

With the exception of handlebars, risers, switches and a couple extra electrical circuits, 1986-current runs the exact same exterior parts. Oh, and the Savage variant has uglier turn signals.

Hey...I sort of like those big, gawky turn signals.  They're big enough and bright enough that everybody can see them. A case of function outweighing form.

I have stock fronts and 1950s big rig bullets (red, glass lenses) on my 1998. The rears got used as baseballs...  Roll Eyes

My '07 S40 fell over on the trailer, a result of a broken tie-down strap. It landed with the left side of the tank on an eyebolt. The dealership quoted me a price of $638, not including labor, for a replacement. It is not clear whether that price includes the petcock, but I expect not.

I listed a really nice set of 07 white body parts on eBay.  They were nearly flawless.....and I finally ended up sellling them for about $ 400 for the whole set.  I got lots of offers to buy the tank for $ 200, and right side panel that seems to be lost easily for $ 40.....but the front and rear fender seem to be almost worthless alone.

I suggest you watch eBay patiently for the color you want, and ride with the color you have until the right set comes along.  You should be able to get something for $ 400 - $ 600 that is in nearly perfect condition.

Another option is to contact a local autobody painter at an independent shop.......and see what they can do.  The cost of the base coat, color coat, clear coat supplies is pretty darn expensive, and it may be $ 300 worth of paint alone.

When it comes to ordering OEM tanks via websites, there's one thing I'm not sure about.  For nearly every year model and on nearly every website they list three options for fuel tanks.

The part numbers are different, the prices are the same, and the spec drawings look identical.

Does anyone know why you'd get the E03, E28, vs. the E33?

My '07 is the dark blue color.

I expect the different part numbers are simply the different colors, as Suzuki usually offered two or three colors every year.

As long as you don't buy 1998 orange, everything is fine. That miserable excuse for paint isn't UV stable, turns a rotten persimmon orange-yellow-pink inside a couple months.

Photo one is stock faded out at a year of ownership. Photo 2 and 3 is after a respray in 2000 with Kubota Type 2 orange, from the tractor dealership.

Yep, look at the rear fender in my 1st photo, same pukey rotten persimmon or rotten apricot color. Disgusting.

& yet another option is to go riding around, visit body shops, talk to the GUYS who work there., Youd be surprisedhow many work on the side, at home, for cheap. Case O beer & $100.00 & YOU be there to sand & help,, youd learn & save..
