Insurance: The NOOBIEST of NOOB questions
08/13/13 at 10:53:13

Okay guys... simple question but surely you'll know the answer.

I'm likely to buy a bike tomorrow on craigslist.  So when do I get insurance for it?  I can't get insurance for a bike that isn't mine so I guess I do it after I buy it.  But then aren't I briefly in possession of an uninsured bike?

Is there any delay between buying and insuring it?  Conceivably could I buy the bike, call a company, get coverage, and be active straight away or do they have to wait until paperwork is filed with the DMV or some such grace period?

You need to call your insurance company and check for the conditions.....but my policy allows for a "grace period" where I can buy a vehicle and have a period of time to notify my company that I will be adding or changing a vehcile.

If you don't have a policy......you don't have insurance.

I know when I have bought a car at a dealer they have me call my insurance company and get "Proof of Insurnace" before I leave the dealer with the new/used car.

Just call your insurance company with the VIN and let them know the date you will take possession.

Good luck and keep us posted

Don't know where you are, but in my state(NY) you can't register any vehicle without proof of insurance. If your state is the same and you plan on riding the bike home after you buy it - legally - you have to get that stuff taken care of before you pick it up.

Someone told me cops seldom bother motorcylists unless they are being stupid..

That said it took 6 months to get my title... putting me square in winter. So I didn't get mine until this spring.

Still haven't passed the motorcycle test.. dabbnabbit...

I would love to live in New Zealand.....but the idea of riding around with uninsured motorists is not very appealing!  If you crash into me do you just pay me for the repairs?

Washington state is the same way, not required. But you'd better buy it anyway...

It's always good to have the insurance coverage, I'm with Dave see if your insurance offers a temporary umbrella for such occasions. If not you can insure it even if you don't own it with the VIN#, I've done this before when purchasing vehicles before driving them home, the insurance company will even email you a temporary card. Worst case scenario is that you don't buy the bike and cancel the coverage.

I've had the paperwork all filled out and in the system, policy paid for  before and they said just call them with the VIN when I got it.

My insurance covers me for 10 days on anything I buy.  I generally will call them while standing there just after completing the sale.  As said above, they will email you a card so you'll have it when you get home.

In SC, they made it completely illegal to ride anything on the road that requires a license plate without either a plate or temporary tag. NO grace period at all. A dealer paper tag is considered a temporary tag for in state use.  You gotta go to the highway dept to get a temp tag and have to have taxes paid, insurance, etc., why not just get the stupid tag?

Anyway, check with your insurance company, most are very easy to deal with about new vehicles.  They want you to have it so they can bill you for insurance. If you have no insurance of any type now, talk with an agent and see what they can do for you.  They should be able to work out a way you can have insurance pretty much the minute you buy it.

Yeah here in Wa State, it is not required. I have it though
on both mine and the hubby's bikes.
I wouldn't even consider riding without it.

I can't speak for all insurance companies but seems most
if not all allow a grace period like some already mentioned.
Check with your insurance company and then you will have
the answer your seeking.. Good luck and post a pic of your bike
and yourself.. Smiley kim

Just renewed mine with a company that only does motorcycles. $857 CA, for $1 mil liability, $1000 deductible comp, and $1000 deductible collision.
Welcome to Da Great White Nort'.  Shocked
In Ontario the minimum fine for driving wo insurance is $5000, and you lose points on your licence, and it makes insurance VERY expensive, if you can find a company to insure you.
The business is so lucrative up here that even some grocery store chains sell  insurance.

Only when you make a claim, and then they forget the lube! Grin
