Got a new hip. Not like the standard replacement.

August 10 will be 60 days since I got a "Birmingham" (England) hip. It was made by Smith and Nephew. I was up walking in four hours with little pain. I did this because I was dragging my right leg like Chester in Gunsmoke for two years. My Labrum which cushions the bones was badly worn with parts of bone beginning to fill the joint. Lifting my right leg to the footpeg was agony. The surgery and two months of Physical Therapy three times a week made me stronger than I've been in awhile. I also wear a hidden brace to keep me from digging my foot into the ground and falling. That is caused by nerves in my back.

The Birmingham procedure leaves the ball on the top of the Femur and is actually called a resurfacing procedure. The ball is ground to fit a "cap" with a pin sticking into the Femur head. The Acetabelum is ground to form a pocket for the socket, which is cemented in place until the bone can grow around it. About 70,000 have been done in ten years. I am 60 and was walking into church in two weeks with no cane. I have waited till now to mention this, but I feel much better with no hip pain. My back is still in bad shape, but getting the hip right has reduced that pain significantly. There are exceptions to who can qualify for this surgery, but I love my new hip. If you are hurting bad, check this out on the internet. I know there are a bunch of old farts on here, who, like me, are high mileage. You may be a candidate for this procedure. Doubles tennis after a year is possible, and a regular hip surgery with the cutting of the femur top is easily done if this hip fails. I hope this will help someone who is hurting and unable to ride or just go to your favorite dealer and browse around.  Boofer  Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley

Congratz Boofer... Where did you get it done?

Hips, were never that big a deal for me when I was younger... now that I realize that general health can go down fast ( for us older folks) when hips break, I pay a good bit more attention to it.

Good deal, major joint deterioration is definitely not a pleasant thing to deal with. How long until you are cleared to use your bike again?

I cleared myself about 40 days from surgery. Dr said I could drive again and most things are "as tolerated", so I eased onto my bike and took her out for a 25 mile loop. Sore the next day, but keeping up Physical Therapy at home works soreness out.  Smiley

Power comes from a 460 cc single cylinder, four-stroke engine which puts out 39 hp at 7,500 rpm and 43 Nm of torque at 5,500 rpm. The engine has an average mileage of 55-60 mpg and propels the scooter to a maximum speed of 99 mph.

LOL, I was checkin' out the 300 scooter in the same lineup...it says it will do 70-80mph with 60+ mpg. Could you imagine passing an 18 wheeler on an interstate on one of those lil' scoots? what a hoot!

Best of luck Boofer, don't forget to heed all of your doctor's and physical therapists' advise!

My Dad and Uncle both had their hips replaced two days apart by the same Doctor and went to the same physical therapist. My Dad followed all the instructions to a tee, including when walking up stairs only do one step at a time and a year later he is pain free and doing awesome with his mobility. My Uncle who is head strong and doesn't like to listen to anyone disregarded all the things you should do if he was feeling well enough and now a year later is in chronic pain and needs to go back in for the surgery, he was told it was because he didn't follow the instructions on limitations he was given and pushing himself too much too soon  Sad
