Another S40 Raptorized
07/23/13 at 15:00:57

Just a word of thanks to others on this forum for your advice and info. I bought a 2012 S40 a few months ago, and have already applied some of the suggested mods. Progressive Suspension rear shocks have improved the harsh, jolting ride and adjusting the idle mix screw has improved the sporadic gunfire (backfiring). So I recently located and purchased an OEM Yamaha Raptor 660 petcock, anticipating failure of the stock unit someday. 1049 miles, and guess what happened yesterday? The tank was over half full, the motor conked out, tried reserve, no luck. Pulled off, switched to PRI, and got me home. With the advice here, the change was not difficult, and the new petcock fits perfectly. I guess the Versalavy (sp?) is next. Smiley

Thanks again. I bought the new petcock from CheapCycleParts.com, good service but not cheap. I wanted to add that the S40 seems to run better now! The original petcock may have been defective. There's no use persuing a warranty claim, tho - generally any owner mods will void the warranty. So what. I stopped trusting warranties after I got burned on a Ford Mustang years ago. Been buying Jappers ever since, and loving every one!

I have a noob question:
after had installed Raptor petcock and had blocked the vacuum port on the carb, there are some advices about the new petcock use?
For example: it's important switch it to OFF few miles before ending trips? or something else?

Switch it to off when you END the trip, not before.

I shut my petcock off about 1/4 mile before reaching my driveway.  I do this so that I can run most of the fuel out of the float bowl before I shut the bike off.  It is not necessary to do this - but I just feel better knowing there is less E10 fuel sitting in the aluminium float bowl.   If I don't ride for a while I know that when I turn on the petcock - I will get a fresh charge of fuel into the carb....and not fuel that has been sitting in a vented float bowl evaporating off the gasoline and leaving the ethanol behind.

STEALTHMOBILE -
Hi, good to hear from you! I installed Progressive Suspension's 412-4201c shocks, 11.5 inches. Stock units are 10.5, so some rear-end lifting will occur. Order the units for Suzuki Intruder 80, and they bolt right on. No other mods are needed. DO Not ask PS about shocks for the S40 - they don't specifically list any! The tail light comes up about 2 inches, the seat about an inch, the kickstand about a half-inch. The passenger pegs clear the stock muffler by about 3/4 inch, just enough. The ride and handling were both improved considerably. Also I ordered them from JCMOTORS.com.
