Speedometer/Odometer Trouble
07/23/13 at 08:42:40
Hello all,
I recently put my Savage back together. I had to replace the fuel floats in my carb since the bowl was overflowing with fuel. I also had to replace the battery.
Unfortunately, now my speedometer and odometer are not working. I've double checked the steps I took when I took off the fuel tank and I can't figure out what it is I've missed. Clymer's has no info on this issue, apparently. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

You probably don't have the speedo cable inserted all the way on the transmission.
There is a key on the cable that needs to line up with a slot on the transmission.

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut between the seat and the handlebars. Make sure yours isn't too tight or too loose.

I am presuming that you did NOT disconnect the speedo cable from the speedometer when you pulled the tank. No reason to do so.

Have you plugged the speedometer housing back into the wiring loom?
Pretty easy to forget this as you basically have to balance the tank like your taking it from behind and then faf with the connectors to get it connected. I've forgotten to connect it at least a couple of times after taking the tank off and a session on the carbs.
Do the indicator lights come on?
Other easy solution is that you've forgotten to connect up the speedometer cable that on the savage runs straight to the engine. I forget this step basically every time I take the tank off and have to go over

Thanks for the quick responses everyone.
The indicator lights do come on. I'm going to follow up on the rest of your suggestions.
I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again!

I'm just now getting a chance to get on here, but I wanted to thank everyone again with all the advice.
It was the key part not connecting, so it ended up being a quick fix.
Thanks again, everyone.
