Going for me a 2004... garage queen

Well I got a line on a 2004 LS 650 same as the wifes cept its blue. The guy has had it for about 2yrs and it was one of his mothers learners. It hasn't been started in over a year and he said he couldn't get it running very good (sounded like petcock and carb) when he got it.
Since he's been having problems with it, think I should talk him down? I know kbb probably says $1200, but its not running and didn't run well when he was working on it, so I figured I would offer him $800 for it.
Does that sound fair? he didn't mention any faults or that the motor was shot, just that he couldn't get it to run right. It is in mint condition other wise and when I did see it last year I kinda thought about makin' him an offer but held off.
Worst case scenario would be I could not get it running, but it would make a great parts bike for the wifes, so either way I could make a win/win out of it if I can get it cheap and fixed or not fixed and use as parts for momma.

If I remember, was very low, like 4k or under. Its a friend of a friend and I just kinda looked at it, wasn't very interested cause I was working on the wife's at the time and found it amazing that there was another one around.
Going to sell the Harley this week, so i'll be sending the guy a text or calling him if my friend can get the phone number. I just don't wanna piss the fella off by only offering him $800

If the bike is not corroded and has good curb appeal......it is a great deal even at $ 1,200 if it was selling in this area.  Any bike about that year that is in good shape would be over $ 2,000 in the Cincinnati area.  The bikes going for $ 1,200 up here are very beat up.

$800 does sound low....but he might say yes.
Make the offer as a starting point to negotiating. If he says no, then you can ask what is the lowest he is willing to go. His answer may still be low, or it may be a firm $1200. Either way the bike sounds like a good deal if it is mint, running or not as long as the engine turns over with compression.

Well it was one of his moms learner bikes (she had four bikes at the time he got it) and she asked him to get it running and sell it for her, so I don't even know if the title is in his name or his moms.
I'm sure he wouldn't be too p'od' if I lowballed him first just to get his reaction, i'd just say it would be good to have a full bike for parts for the wife's if he don't think he can get it running.
He is an air force senior master sgt so I know he don't need the cash, but maybe his mom does.....guess i'll wait till after this week to see if the Harley dealer will fold and buy the roadglide from me.
Wife wants to sell her little 250 Honda rebel now too.....empty out the garage real quick that would! make room I say!

make sure it will at least crank over.

yep, offer 800, be prepared to give 1000

go in there with print out of kbb value and guesstimate $200 in parts to get it running. (carb rebuild, filters, battery, oil, tires?, tune up, etc. lay it on)

and make sure the registration is up to date, if not might as well part it out.

Good plan,, that thing weighs a lot for its power. The 650 is low & not that heavy. My girl weighs 105 & can handle it, she is about 5'3"..
If a guy screws up & pulls out in front of someone, a 250 wont get him outta trouble.. well,, the Honda Rebel 250 wont,, a Kawasaki 250 would, drop a gear & nail it,,

Vers, most states don't have Commiefornia's back fee issues. My truck hasn't been licensed since 1974, was put back in the system in 1994, dropped out again in 2004. No issues.

You sure? We just tossed a second plate on the C10, hit the line, swap from TN to MS plate so the trailer doesn't need a plate... Don't ask me, father in law's dumb idea. I'd rather he'd bought a trailer plate. Lot cheaper...  Grin

In Kentucky you got to pay the Ad Volorem taxes every year if you license it or not.  When you go to get another vehicle licensed....they will not renew your plate until you pay up all your overdue taxes.  You don't have to pay for a license plate or sticker....but you got to pay up any overdue vehicle taxes.

Glad I live in Tennessee. We have none of that. And you only need plates on commercial trailers and campers not utility trailers. They are also only $14.75 a year for campers in my county.

MS requires the trailer have a plate if the tow rig is from out of state. Around here, a plateless trailer behind a MS licensed vehicle will get you ticketed.

Legal? i don't know, it's so cheap to get a trailer plate that it's a non-issue. TN truck, TN trailer plate, valid in the lower 48 so...

I did tow my horse trailer from WA to TN in 2011 with expired 1991 Alaska tag, and no paperwork... Drove past every scale house, even in states that require ag inspection upon entry...  Roll Eyes
