The following study shows it has 1,274 - 1,312 ppm of ZDDP. That is a littel low but probably enough to keep the cam and lifters working provided that the formula has not been changed..

Here is the multi-page thread on how much zinc you need.....you decide if you are happy with the amount Royal Purple provides.

Hmm, I did put synthetic oil in the XJ900. After 100km it starts to make noise. I change to mineral oil and it went silence again.
Never synthetic again. Any mineral oil of correct spec will do.

I am not afraid of synthetics and I run esther based synthetics in my 2 cycle equipment and my 4 stroke trials bike. The trials bike has roller rockers and does not need large amounts of ZDDP.
It is critical in the Savage that we have a high pressure lubricant for the solid rockers......and at the moment that is provided by having something around 1,400 ppm of ZDDP - the exact number needed is open to debate. However the approximately 600 ppm available in the newer oil formulas is not enough for our solid rockers....and we don't have to worry about comtaminating an oxygen sensor or catalytic converter.
