I think I have a problem....
07/20/13 at 18:11:09

I just realized, after several hours looking at bikes online today(while my son was napping) that there isn't a single production motorcycle made right now that I would leave in factory trim. Granted, I haven't seen them all but nothing I've seen in recent months from any manufacturer scratches my itch.  I think I might have a problem...

Anyone else underwhelmed by the current product lines, or is it just me?

Edit: regardless of what style you dig, of course.  A close friend of mine is currently lamenting the state of the Enduro market right now, and has said that his KLR 650 is equal to or better than any other enduro out right now, and its pretty old...

The bobber guys take stuff off to get rid of all that "excess crap" the factories install. Others add stuff from cup holders to incredible amounts of chrome. Almost no one seems to think factories put decent tires on anything, no matter the make of the bike or of the tires. There are lots of makers of aftermarket pipes, all claiming more power and lighter weight "for off-road use only." For carburetors there are jet kits; for fuel injected ones there are electronic magic boxes to "correct the horribly lean mixtures forced on makers by the EPA." The list goes on, and makes accessory catalogs pretty bulky. For the widest variety of over-the-counter farkles, visit your local Harley dealer. For beginner bikes, you may well have to make do yourself. Have fun. Hope you have a good line of credit or a machine shop.

The last one I would have left stock got killed off a couple years ago. Harley Davidson Heritage Springer with dealer installed retro saddlebags and seat.

Current crop of metrics? Boring... $800+ to switch a Yamaha Bolt from ugly cast wheels to proper spoked wheels...

That's funny,... I did both...
Chrome don't weigh much... Undecided...

As far as "stock" goes,... I can't leave my shoes stock... Huh...

Many years ago a co-worker told me the Harley mystique. When you buy a new Harley, you have to "make it your own" by customizing it. When you buy an old Harley, you must "restore it to original condition." It made me think of C. Northcote Parkinson's adage "Bureaucrats make work for each other."

Restore? That takes all the fun out of riding it. Perfect paint, giant fenders, unwieldy 5.00-16 tires on each end... The "dork-mobile" "buddy" seat... Wallowing around corners like you are strapped to a pregnant drunken elephant on greased ice...

There is a perfect 65 Panhead at our local dealership. My friend Doug wants to toss in a battery and ride it as built. Me? I'd pull the engine, sell the rest to get my hands on a rigid frame and a springer with a 21" spool wheel. I'll take handling over "aesthetics" any time, especially the aesthetics of stone stock Duo-Glides, the worst looking bikes HD ever saddled the buying public with.

1965 was the first year for the electro glide and I would love to have a stock 1965 Harley. The last year for the pan head and the first year for electric start. It would be sacrilegious to chop one up Roll Eyes.

Yea the Duo-Glides had that corny looking seat set up didn't they?

(looks it up on Google images to double check)

Yupper, and the shocks look awkward mounted too far forward too LOL. Grin

Stock...

Ridable...

The rigid is 55 based, but, other than some minor oiling and rocker arm specs, same engine.

I really like that front end. drum brakes allow for a cleaner handlebar setup, but those are virtually naked,, where are the switches & wires?

Kick only, wires are in the frame most likely, micro switch for brake light under brake pedal... What else does it need? A couple toggles for power on power off and headlight brightness...

Find them on the stock version...

As much as I dislike juice front forks, I'd ride a HydraGlide...
