So long John Wayne
07/19/13 at 22:49:56

Our loving Rottie, John Wayne lost his
battle with bone cancer on July 10th.
My heart still aches and tears come and go.
His remains were returned this week inside
a beautiful blue urn. It now accompanies
his pic as well as his collar, leash, muzzle and
2 of his favorite toys.

We had no idea it was cancer and the cancer
had eaten 1/2 the bone in his leg.
This  dog never complained nor when I rubbed
his leg, flinched nor whined. He gave us no clue
that it hurt. Vet said he should have been on paid
meds. Well how can you tell that when he never complained,
limped nor made you think something was wrong?
A lump appeared and again when I touched or rubbed it he
never even growled.
Amputation was not an option as his hips were starting to go
down hill and that would have placed more pressure on them.
Had we known sooner, perhaps a plate could have been placed inside.
Just found it too late. :'( :'(
We knew that the day was coming possibly within the year that we would have to do this, it was just not expected to be that day.
I was shocked and still have a hard time believing he is gone.
We were so fortunate to have such a faithful companion that guarded us and the bikes so well.
Cancer not only takes our 2 legged loved ones, it takes our 4 legged ones as well.
I never left home without giving him a kiss on his nose, nite goober dog, Mommy loves you.. Guard the house..
Thank you all for allowing me to share my story.. Hugs xoxo kim

KimChris:

I am sorry for your loss and I about to share your pain.  Our Coonhound named Sarah is laying at my feet as I type.....she is 13.....and she is getting weaker each day.  She is 3 years beyond what they project her breed will live, and her siblings have died years ago.  A couple of weeks ago she had an upset stomach and stopped eating for a few days and got so weak she could barely stand, and we thought it was her time.....but she started drinking and eating and she is back to being a reasonably healthy dog for her age.  About 2 months ago she lost her ability to climb stairs as her back legs are horribly weak. We are traveling this weekend to a family reunion, and she has been part of thei family for more than half of my married life.....she is family.  This will no doubt be her last family reunion.

They give us so much love and affection.....it is hard to let go.

So sorry to hear the KC. We lost our lab cross Panzer in early 2005, went out one day and her back had given out. She was all of 8, we'd planned on her being around a lot longer. Our cat Dizzy was 15 or so when he succumbed to stomach cancer.

I too am sorry for your loss.
I lost Truman, a wonderful Malamute, to bone cancer in his jaws March 7, 2012.
I found some comfort at the Rainbow Bridge, maybe you will also.

Sorry Chris, and those who shared a similar story. I have lost 3 dogs in the last 10 years and was about to quit their company as it hurt too much...... but that would be to deny all the good they gave me only because of the temporary pain their leaving brings.....
I (my wife anyway) relented and Dolly entered our life last December, odd how my heart doesn't hurt when she is making me laugh  Smiley

Thank you guys.. Ratdog, thank you for the Rainbow Bridge
link. I can't look at it right now.
I know of it and have read it. Our Lab was laid to rest 1.5 years ago. She was 13 and her hips were getting to where they could not sustain her any longer.
It has always amazed me to how we come to love and think of our 4 legged kids as if they were our 2.

I wanted to post a pic of John Wayne. This was John Wayne watching me the day I placed the fork brace on Genie. Actual date was 1/11/11
He was a very handsome dog wasn't he? We had hoped to breed him, yet never found a girl good enough..  Wink

I'm really sorry for your loss. I've had 2 rotties and both of them got cancer at 8 yrs old. Seems like that's common for the breed. I would set outside on a bench while my wife went grocery shopping when they were puppies. They were cute and looked like little bears and everyone that came by wanted to pet them. They learned to love people and were never vicious. I lost 2 dogs over the winter and I wanted another rottie but my wife found a 10 month old English Mastiff. She's my baby, she will be a year old in a few weeks and weighs 118 lbs. Once again you have my condolences, God bless and comfort you.

Knowing that our dog is not long for this world, it was nice that we got to spend a nice long weekend with our 13 year old coon dog Sarah.  We had a family reunion at a campground and Sarah has been to several of these over the years.  Most were surprised that she was still with us.  Her back legs are weak and I have to lift her 80 pound mass in and out of the car, and carry her up stairs if there are more than a couple of risers.

We have been considering the Rottie as the replacement for our coon dog.  Sarah has a great dispostion - but she is s drooler and a bit laid back.  I felt that a Rottweiler would be a good "next" dog as they are more focused and attentive than a coon dog.  After having to haul my dog up and down stairs this weekend......I am fairly certian I could not do the same for a 120 pound Rottweiler in 8 or 10 years!

The love that our animal friends gives us can be summed up in one word. Pure. The pain in your heart will fade, slowly. the memories will only get better. Please fill your thoughts with these memories and laughter.
