Sputtering on Accel and sometimes Cruise
07/18/13 at 11:45:14

My 87 Savage sputters(feels like it's running out of gas) on accel and cruise from time to time.  It sputters more often on acceleration.  Sometimes it dies on me too.  It will take me a few minutes to get her back up and running, then she runs like a bat out of hell!  I did the petcock repair a couple of years ago.  I have also taken apart the petcock and carb a few times to see if there was crud blocking up the fuel delivery.  Nothing.  I am kind of stumpped at this point.  Thinking I may need to test the ignition system.  Need a little help and some suggestions.

Have you done the petcock vacuum test?

Have you checked the air filter?

How is the spark plug ?

Air filter is a cone type and good.

Spark plug gets changed every year.  Havent checked since it is only a couple months old.  I probably should to see how the fuel is being burned.

I need to check that little port out and see if my filter is blocking it.  You would think though that it would run like crap all the time though?  Unless upon getting warmed up it expands and moves away slightly from the carb?

I didn't see your other link for the vaccum test on the pet thingy.  Would that still aply to a stock modified one?  I got rid of the diaphram.

You have not described the symptoms enough that a definate cause can be identified yet...it could be fuel or electrical.

The sidestand switch can cause problems when the bike is in gear - but if the sidestand switch is the cause the bike should start up as soon as the bike is in neutral.  You could temporarily bypass the sidestand switch to see if the problem goes away.

Fuel related problems tend to be soft.....meaning the symptoms don't appear or go away instantly......the bike will lose power or get it back with a bit of a delay.  Electrical problems generally occur faster and the symptoms can change in an instant.

It was not clear that you had done a manual conversion on the petcock, so that test not necessary.  But perhaps you should do a flow rate test and compare with the results in the "how to" for the filter.
