Heavier Oil Lessens OilCap Leaking?
07/15/13 at 23:05:42

It's getting near 100DegreesF and the HeadboltPlug/Cap appears to be leaking now at 8,800 miles. It's ridden in Stop-Go traffic a lot. Anybody notice it can be lessened by going to 20W-50 Oil?? One member sez 'It's not a continual problem' on his. I wonder why.
Also, whats the worse-case if I put off replacing it this Summer? Has a Plug/Cap ever been known to completely dislodge and gush oil by the Ounce/Mile? I REALLY don't wanna wrench on it til Fall...then do a CamChain Tensioner re-do at same time. For now, I say wipe it down each night. Anybody?  Locomotiveman1

It's not a worry,... more of a nuisance...
Thicker oil might help a bit for while... but, it never gets better...
... it also never pops out...
When it gets on your nerves, too muck... do the fix and be done with it...
... or,... let it bleed... Huh...

Yeah...a rag wrapped around a screwdriver end to clean up the fins has been used for worse things. Locomotiveman1

anyone else think that suzuki ended up just painting the fins black to hide the impending leak?

Mine leaks the same whether it has 10W40 (not in over a decade), 20W50 (not in at least a decade) or 15W40 (the last 10 years or so). Spray can of electrical contact cleaner to remove the muck and mess as needed. Mine has leaked since day one brand new purchase. It's a cosmetic annoyance, at best. More disconcerting is the Brit bike standard issue lower end leaks, and even they aren't bad enough to be of any true concern.

Savages eventually leak. All engines do.

Black paint is cheaper than the aluminum dust silver paint. Hence the switch.

Jack_650. Willmar. but the 01 bike's being driven in Mpls by my daughter every day. She a good 'wrenchhead' actually. Bought the bike from wife of retired Policeman in Madrid, Iowa. Only drove it on sunny weekends and had to interview the new buyer to be sure it went to a good home. I'm serious!! I railroaded in Mkto in late 60's while going to MSU...played cards/drank cold beer with Vikes during training camp. Good times in Mkto.
