Hissing/snare drum type sound after it gets hot?
07/12/13 at 06:42:51
Ok so you guys have thoroughly got me thinking every sputter or thump that comes out of her is the cam chain tensioner gremlin about to rip my engine to pieces. Anyhow the problem is this: So I start the bike cold and she sounds fine, everything as normal. Take off down the road at a high speed(55-6omph), and come to a stop maybe 5 miles down the road and what sounds like the muffler is making an odd exhaust note that sounds like a hiss or a metallic rattle. But if you let it idle a bit, or I guess cool off this sound will fade away. Not even sure it's the muffler but it sounds like it has to be. I'm stumped. And it's been doing this for a day or two now. I'm really worried its the cams but i wouldn't think if it were that it would flare up and go away like it does. Any thoughts?

I might suggest you buy a mechanics stethoscope and track down the noise. They can be had for cheap at Harbor Freight. The stock muffler has been known to develop a metallic chirp sound akin to a 1960's VW.
Good hunting

Pull the muffler, go for a ride around the block. No chirp, rattle or bang? Loose baffle in the muffler, time for a new one.

Could it be the speedo rattle / buzz, mine only starts with the buzz noise after it gets warmed up good. Have a Raptor petcock on order and going to do the speedo fix, new petcock, check the valves, and spark plug while I have the tank off.

Sorry forgot to add in my last post, try putting your hand over the speedo when the noise starts and see if that reduces or stops the noise. Under the Technical Documents / Reference Section there is a series of posts about the speedo rattle / buzz.

I figured I would cover several items while I have the tank off for the Raptor anyway. May do the spark plug door mod to the cover also while the tank is off. Thanks for the idea - JOG. Right now I am sitting at 5200 on the bike and figured I had better check a little deeper on the next oil change, than just the usual oil change items. Have not had pet thingy issues, but don’t really want any either.
