Strange Ticking Noise From Top End?

Yesterday iI went for a ride as i normally do, and i started her up and I heard tick tick tick the whole time it runs. The ticking matches the engine speed and I was told that the valves needed adjusting, i ride normally, not too insane but i do ride it shes not burning oil and the oil level is where it should be and I put an ear to the cam chain tensioner and i dont think its that. Does anyone have an idea as to what the culprit is?

Reply #1 - 07/11/13 at 13:03:37 That's valves... if it's a lite ticking, and it was hot outside, it's probably fine... When were they last adjusted?... You should check them once in a while... Maybe every 5 or 10k miles...

Reply #2 - 07/12/13 at 11:51:15 idk when the last time the valves were done, i bought it w 17k and now it has just under 21k is this a really hard thing to do or no? i have never worked on this type of bike before but know a few people that have. the bike was sleeping for about 6 years before i bought it

It actually does not matter which tdc the engine is on when the valve adjustment is started. Either the exhaust valves will have tension, or the intake valves will. With both access ports open, set the one that is not under tension. No different than early OHC Toyota or Honda car engines, the cam followers in a Savage are basically 22R Toyota units. You adjust them the same as you would a 22R engine's valve train.

It isn't rocket science, it's actually been around since the 1920s... when the first OHC single cylinder motorcycles competed in the Isle of Mann TT.

Reply #7 - 07/13/13 at 11:56:22 beg to differ WD, but it does matter. the way the followers are shaped, you don't have much room for error. rotate the crank same way wheels turn half a turn after the intake valves come back up line the marks up on the crank and case go to it.

Reply #8 - 07/13/13 at 13:45:18 Setting the valves to the wrong TDC results in tappy tappy noises that do not go away until the valves are reset correctly to the real TDC.

my mechanic is my best friend.... so i cant just can him, hes the one that told me about the bike originally.... this is the first mechanical hiccup the bike has made in almost 27 years he knows all of the pos that owned it from new and its been very well maintained its whole life, its just been sitting for a few years, mainly bc the po almost got killed on it due to a car pulling out in front of him. If that happened to me id wanna park it too not trying to sound mean Wink
