It idles weird and has trouble keeping alive while warming up. It lugs as if its coughing over and over again.

mine idles low when first started, i jack the idle up, as it warms, idle rpm comes up, i turn it down,, notice, nothing but fingers needed to adjust idle. remember, keep it spinnin 1.000 rpm,, oil pressure,,
What happens if you start blipping the throttle? Will it rap up or does it gag & die?

It revs. But like how the crappity smack do I know when it's at 1000? And also why can't it just start normally without having to adjust the idle?

I always use the enrichment (choke) when starting my bike to keep the rpms up until it warms up. That way I don't have to mess with constantly adjusting the idle screw.

I pull the choke all the way, start it, then push it in halfway, at that point the idle sounds like its about to stall every crank, but it keeps going.

there are 2 knotches on the choke

1 knotch out richens it up a bit but speeds up the idle too.

full out just makes it rich.

well,, the warning is an important one, low rpm = low oil pressure = short life, if its chugging along below 1,000 rpm, ya gotta deal with that or youll scorch the cam journals in the head,
i piddle w/ idle adjustment ever time i fire up, takes about 20 minutes or so for it to get all the right. i dont mind, its my baby, ill keep it spinning free.

Well on the first knotch out the idle sounds really irregular, and it's idling as if its dying, but it doesn't.

Well it used to start fine, but I guess I started fiddling with the idle mixture screw to lessen the backfiring, and at first it ran ok but now it won't even idle normally on a cold start.

if its acting differently & you havent done anything, id put some sea-foam thru it a few tanks worth,, if thats no help, id have a look in the carb.
have you ever had the bowl off?
how much do you ride?
how long does it sit?
have you tried putting it on prime to make sure the bowl is full?
how about draining the bowl to see if ya get anything besides gas?
how long does it take till it starts running like it should?
if it clears up, idk how its a junk in the carb problem, butm hey, im not the carb genius, either.

one of you smart guys mite wanna jump in here

Never had the bowl off.
I ride almost daily.
Don't have prime because I have the raptor petcock.
It runs ok once it's heated up. Still has a bit of uneven idle and it skips beats regularly while I'm waiting at a red. Meaning it'll be chugging along and have one chug not happen in a steady pattern.

If there is something in the idle circuit or pilot jet....spray Seafoam won't help.  You need to use the kind you add to the fuel and it cleans while you ride.

You might also try turning the idle mixture screw out a couple of turns and then back in the same number of turns (while the engine is running) in case something got stuck in the passage at the needle.

Start it up. Put it in first gear. take a ride down the street with the throttle completly closed. If it runs along at about 8-10 mph like that the idle is pretty close to 1000.
