Nother new guy
07/05/13 at 19:16:18

Just got my first bike, 1999 Savage. Came here to learn how to take care of what I can myself and get some help on making it 'mine'. Did some reading here before I got it. Has the Harley muffler and the Raptor petcock already. Seller claims to have rebuilt the carb. Seems to run and ride OK. Anything you guys recommend I should do immediately? Oh and Hi!

19500 miles. Cam chain a problematic item for these bikes?

I've read that one should do an oil change regardless. Good idea?

Welcome Toroso!

For sure do an oil change, and use Shell Rotella T oil for best protection. Check the brakes, battery and belt tension(also make sure the belt runs true and no damage).

As to the cam chain......they stretch to the point the tensioner falls apart and trashes your engine..... not a pretty sight!

Beyond that,make it your own!

I'm thinkin you mean tires?  Smiley

I want to put a new set on anyway. I'd to put some on that are a little fatter. Is that possible and will it cause any problems? I know nothing about motorcycles at this point.  Huh

Yeah...tryin' to be funny, not sure what the consensous is on tire life here... I never go over bout 6-8yrs on any set, car, truck or bike, but thats just me, I live in a hot climate, road temps kill.
There are several folks here that will probably fess up some tire type links for ya, so far i've seen almost every style of tire in use from street to dirt to car tires.

100/90-19 F and 140/90-15 R is as big as you want to go. The rims are too narrow for much over that. You can usually shoehorn a 150/80-15 rear in place...

I'm swapping my front out to a 90/90-19 and staying with a 140/90-15 (only because I got it cheap... like $90 off cheap) even though I prefer to run no wider than a 130 rear.

Would you mind cluing me in to the tire numbers? I believe the 19 and 15 are the wheel size. What do the others mean?

Actually, BOTH of you need to head to Shelby County TN in mid-September for the forum get together. Swing by Apache Snow's place and kidnap him and his bike on your way through.

We're going to do our own version of "Bikes on Beale"... among other things. Casey Jones Village, Dixie Gun Works, maybe a few battle field rides.
