Headlight
07/01/13 at 14:07:13

Is there any sort of aftermarket or replacement headlight which is well suited to the savage?

I have one I was going to use but it doesn't have any adjustments for angle and it's also bottom mount and doesn't look like it's going to mount easily.

Just wondered if there way anything people are aware of which mounts up easily as an improvement?

If you drill a hole in the bottom tree, you can run any aftermarket Harley light.

Use the stock headlight shell and reflector, with an HID unit installed.  Three times the brightness with half the electrical load, eh?

I threw in the "eh" because today is Canada day in the US.

edited 4 July: Don't do this.  It's illegal because it makes WAY too much glare.  If you want HID, get the whole headlight as a DOT-approved unit.  LED headlights are an option now too.

I used four pieces of 2" x 1.5" aluminum angle, drilled for eight small nuts and bolts, two holes down to match the triple tree, one up to mount the headlight.  Worked Jes' Fine!

Dont really fancy drilling a bit hole in the tree.. I'd probably ruin it somehow.

I could probably whip up a bracket like this tho aye (we say aye in NZ not eh like Canada)

That'll do the job. But you'd be 1000x happier with a traditional sidemount headlight, they can be rough aimed tighter than most bottom mounts will fine adjust.

I run a 7" Bates/Lucas replica sidemount. My Savage will never run a bottom mount again. Looks better, is high mounted, works better, allows room under the headlight shell for a proper tool roll which completely hides the ugly as a shaved dog's butt lower triple tree... oh, and will accept Triumph/Honda front signals to get rid of the less than aesthetically pleasing stock units (my bike is a 1998, really ugly/oversized signals).

When you swap out the headlight, do all the connections for the turn signals go in the new housing?

If you want them too and the slot in the back of the bucket is large enough. Mine do not, harness is midway through a massive reroute, shorten, control box delete. Which reminds me, I need to order some asphalt wire looming and some braided wire...
