Rear Brake Noise

ive got this really annoying squealing noise whenever i use the rear brake really firmly. I have ridden about 3k miles, and I inspected the shoes right before i put it through state inspection at the beginning of the summer and they were like brand new. i have good stopping power and the thing is the freakin irritation to my ears. How can i cure this? the bike has been off the road for like 6 yrs before I bought it, Would that amount of time affect the shoes? thanks in advance

Moisture seems to be the key, and driving it off does the job. And I use the rears whenever I can to maintain it.
