I was just wondering? How many miles do you feel you need under your belt before you consider someone a noob?

Haha it depends on how they ride. Some riders are noobs for life.

Well, see there, you already knew the answer to the question you asked ... it all depends on the look of the "sketchy rearend".   Grin   Cool

It took me alot longer than I will admit too.  My grand dad used to say, "you can learn something new everyday and still die dumb."

Hmmmmm...

Okay,... 100 point system...
1 point for every 100 miles...
10 points for each roadside breakdown...
5 for each oil change, valve adjust, brake replacement, etc...
10 for crashing,  7 for a slow dump...
-5 for each time you forget to put the kickstand up or down, and the bike falls over... or dropping it while checking the oil...  Grin...
-5 for running out of gas...
-5 for leaving your keys in the bike... (guilty)... Huh...
-20 if you post asking why it won't start,. and it turns out you left the sidestand down, didn't pull in the clutch, or left the kill switch down... (but only if you post it)...
oh!.. and +10 points for every 100 posts here at SS.Com... Wink...

... a few members may actually be in the negative...
You know who you are.... Embarrassed...

That is a good question and I think Gizzo is right, it's how you ride.  I was a darn good rider in the late fifties and through the sixties and early seventies.  Then I quit riding until a couple years ago and I am no longer a good rider.  I feel clumsy and inconsistent.

When we are young we learn fast and have fast reflexes and we are also fearless because we don't know any better.  In the sixties I rode many different bikes on all types of surfaces and was always pushing the limits.  I think that improved my skill level.

During these last two years as a re-entry rider I've just been putt-putt- putting along at the same pace over the same good roads.  I won't get better doing that.  Practice makes perfect only when the practice is structured to constantly push you to a higher level.  So this summer I decided to try some new techniques on some more challenging roads and each week I push on my comfort zone.  There is improvement but it is slow going probably due to age but I am getting smoother again.

So hours alone will not make for improvements.

Yeah, I no longer ride with reckless abandon as I did in the 60s and 70s. Cool

I passed through my Noob stage in 1970, progressed to being experienced, and am now proceeding on to being forgetful and cantankerous!

My father used to say something to the effect that there is a difference between ten years of experience and one year's experience repeated ten times.

LOL, after this past week, I still have some NOOB in me too.... I dumped the wifes bike turning into a parking lot at about 10mph (lots of loose gravel), was looking into the lot and not at the ground before I turned.
I was too sure of my abilities...let down my guard...experianced riders never let down thier guard, guess i'm getiing old and cantakerous too  Grin

I think I need a definition check.

Newb - a beginner, but someone who has the potential to learn and get better. Not meant as a derogatory term.

Noob - a beginner, but one who will never get better due to being stupid, unwilling to learn, or just generaly incompetent. Usually meant as a derogatory term.

Or are the terms interchangeable?

riding and doing all your maintenance.
battery clean/fill
oil change
carb clean/rejet
sparky

tire change (you take wheels off, shop can change them)

You do all that and you definitely not a newb.
