Are there any issues with removing the canister assembly under the swing arm ?

It can be done, but make sure you know what your plugging off, and bypassing. Here the complete system:

That is a California emissions requirement. You are good if you don't live in California. There is a vent tube in the tank that you need to block off underneath, and I would think that you would have to modify the gas cap so the tank can vent from there.
The service manual I have makes no mention of it.

It is a Californa requirement to meet their air quality standards. It vents the tank through a canister that cleans the fuel vapors out before it vents the air.

I believe the canister is designed to catch overflow fuel, fumes and engine fumes and cycle them throught a charcoal filter. Is that correct ?

Except......it doesn't catch the gas that leaks out the cap and down the side of the tank after you fill up the tank and ride off. You would actually need a rubber gasket that seals to accomplish that.

that's a flux capacitor, japanese edition, only works at 88 mph while pointed at the rising sun exactly when the center is on the horizon.

OK now my curiosity is piqued. The one hose comes from the tank into the canister so where does the purge line go- to the carb or the air cleaner? For the system to work, the gas cap would have to let air in, but block escaping fumes.
