But I am convinced that the Savage engine is a diamond in the rough. Will never be a crown jewel but can be polished up to shine.

When I was about 16 I saw a hot rod magazine that had an article in it about a lawnmower motor someone had hopped up. Started with a 3.5 horse & massaged it into a 30 HP lump. ( Thats IF I remember 42 years ago as well as I think I do. It was memorable because it was so amazing)

I doubt it was 30hp, unless it had some variety of forced induction.....

If so, then more is possible out of a savage engine......as it is a glorified lawn mower engine.

The max hp per displacement theory suggests that 65hp is possible. (100hp per 1000cc)....but this rule is blown out of the water with modern technology & high rpm motors......
None-the-less......31 hp is a low number.
Alas, remember, that every dyno is different.
A gsxr 1000 might only make 125 hp on that one,?& it's a suggectibe number that should be used to measure performance changes.
I.e- make an exhaust or ignition change & now if produces 34 hp, you know it was a positive change.
That same bike might make 55hp on a dyno in Iowa.
It's just a number. (but a low one!!!!! LOL) Tongue

Well,, 30 HP Is a lot & I dont think it had more than a fancy rod & high comp piston & head & valve work. And, lets not forget,, Odds are, way back then, it was a flathead design.I just remember seeing a HP number on what Had been a 3.5 HP lawnmower motor & going Wow! I gotta check that OUT!  I Thot it was 30,, but, w/o a blower or nitrous & a stopwatch, to keep up with how Long it survived putting that kinda power out,, well,, who knows? Ehh?

paulmarshall...when ya gonna get your 97mm piston dyno'd? It would be cool to see what you gained...then get the new carb...see what you gained...then get the performance cam...see what you gained...you get the idea.

Yes Bubba thats exactly what I plan to do as soon as I break her in. Not clocking up a lot at the moment due to poor weather.
How does the Dyno work? Do they need to rev the daylights out of our bikes to get accurate readings? If so I want to wait till I have done a 1000km.Open for suggestions.
My next upgrade will be a Flat slide carb and Dyno it again.
I am happy to be a Guinea Pig by doing the upgrades and running the tests and getting numbers on paper.

Yea! I'm not sure how the dyno's work and if they red-line them to see whatcha' got...
I was on the verge of going all in last year with Lancers performance package...Cam, Jug, Carb...but second guessed myself because I wasn't sure of the performance gains...
That, and the suspension upgrades, clutch upgrades etc...not to mention the rider upgrades... Grin

I dont think anyone has shown a need to upgrade the clutch to "hang on" to the max this engine can put out. What we have seen, however, is a few busted clutch throwouts,, & That, Muh Friend, can be a Dead Engine event.. So,, I dont suggest stouter springs or shimmed springs unless the clutch simply can handle the power.,
