They can keep their patches.. Im not gonna wear myself out goin somewhere I dont need to go just to turn around & ride back, so I can sew a patch on.. Im sure not gonna put up with cars rippin along at speeds my bike can barely manage..

That is exactly how I feel about it. I think if I had to go somewhere 1000 miles away in a hurry I would do the patch but to go and turn around and come right back forget it.

I qualified for an Iron Butt certificate. I rode from my home in Winston Salem NC to Daytona Beach and back in 18 and1/2 hrs. I was riding a Triumph Trophy. I've ridden my Savage over 400 miles in one day. I don't see why it wouldn't do it but those Iron Butt guys are serious and speed all they can. If you're planning on cruising at 70 mph you'll be left behind. The best thing to do is set up your own ride like I did through the Iron Butt Association. 1000 miles in 24 hrs. The Savage will probably give you no trouble cruising at 70 or 75 mph.

To my eyes, the Iron Butt patch simply proves you are capable of mimicking serious truck driving hours, and no more.

You guys want to do something worth bragging about ? Ride the AlCan Highway from Seattle to Anchorage, send a postcard, and ride back home before the postcard is delivered !

https://maps.google.it/maps?saddr=Seattle,+Washington,+Stati+Uniti&daddr=Anch...

Cool

I mean, anyone can ride NYC to LA and back, where's the big deal?
But the AlCan ? That's adifferent story...

As for me, this is in my bucket list, I'm now trying to talk my wife into coming with me...

https://maps.google.it/maps?saddr=Roma,+RM&daddr=Oslo,+Norvegia+to:Trondheim,...

It's a mere 3000 miles each way... but I intend to stop and sightsee along the way !  Grin

So... if she's coming along, it'll be the big Beemer; if not, if I have to ride solo, I believe it would be a lot more fun on the Savage !
(Now THAT's Iron Butt !!!)

Lancer, I promise you, if you will crate your rex and ship it over, it's free beer from Rome to Nordkapp!

Sounds like a worthy plan.
When I mentioned your comments to my wonderful new wife, she seemed to think that if I go to Italy she absolutely needs to be listed on the itinerary.  "If you go to Italy then I go too".

The longest day I've had in the saddle so far was 315 miles (650 miles for the weekend) so the idea of 1000+ in a day was  Shocked.  But then,  I've only been riding for 3 months, so who knows what I'll be up for in a year or two.

This IB ride matches up bikes with similar fuel ranges but you're all correct- they'd likely be riding 75-80 mph pretty close to the whole way.  The idea of getting hit by the side winds from Vantage to Sprague at those speeds makes me feel a little queasy!

The longest stint I did on the S40 was 511 miles. I had an Air Hawk II seat pad and the tail bag doubled as a back rest.

Go for it. Take plenty of oil and top it up at each stop. Mine would consume oil at sustained highway speeds.

Good hunting

Yall are insane..

I am good for 75 miles @ 55mph. That's round trip to local park on the Natchez  Trace. I "thought about" a 75 mile round trip next "casino" town, but a buddy called and we just did beer locally. (I am not much of a gambler..bores the crap out of me)

If you ran 75 or 80 from Seattle to Missoula and turned around, you'd grenade it coming back up Ryegrass... I had a turned up 14L Peterbilt that couldn't pull that road w/o some serious downshifting for even a light load. 525hp/1850 torque, 15 speed trans. I scattered the insides of a KZ750B (twin) on Ryegrass in the early 90s.

Theres a road in West Texas, cant remember where, Its not a high hill, really, its just a LOoooong grade. An 80,000 pound 5 speed Mack truck barely made it. My boss knew the road & told me to be ready to get out. He said to get it wound out in 5th as much as I could & hit it runnin as hot as I could & be ready to start shifting down & he was right, When I crested that hill I had the door open & was sitting on the edge of the seat with my leg stretched across to the Long Pedal.. I could have easily walked next to that truck at that speed.
