im not sure if im going to fix it or sell it or part it out.
I do 70 miles of highway a day so im thinking maybe I need a bigger bike.

The bike being to small to ride one the highway is not the problem; something broke in the engine, that is the issue

Yes I agree with Lancer more like a ring damaged during installation.
I paid a professional to do that bit.

i think i blew it up today

I was going down the highway after work today and it started making a rattling sound and then I seen the blue smoke.

riding this summer might be over for me

I was doing about 80 for about 25 miles.

im just glad it did not lock up on me

I agree with Lancer. European big singles have been cruising at those speeds (well... almost...) since the 1950's.

Current big single enduros (dualsports) WILL rev much harder and higher than the Savage.

It could well be a broken piston ring.
Depending on how much the broken piston ring scored the cylinder, you may need a simple hone (=1 thou") or you may need it rebored again by a few thou".

In any case you WILL need to fit a new set of rings AND you should have RUN IN your rings and piston anyway.

May I suggest you slow down to 60-ish and enjoy the scenery, 35miles each way at 60mph will require 35 minutes but fuel and OIL economy will greatly improve!
(as compared to 35 miles at 80mph = 29 minutes... is it really worth saving those 5-6 minutes?)

IMO, if you think you have to do 80 mph for more than a few minutes, you need a bike w/ more cu inches.
At 80 mph, even flat ground and no headwind, there is very little manifold vacuum, which in my experience is a meltdown waiting to happen.

I don't have a complete set of data.....but I have been riding for a few weeks with a Vapor Speedo/Tach that has a temperature sensor on the head.  At 50 mph the head temperature is around 250 degrees F, at a steady 65 mph it approaches 290 degrees.  I will never know what the head temperature is after doing 80 mph for 25 miles....but I bet it is high!

Was the bike low on oil?

Drain the oil into a clean, non metallic bucket. Sweep thru w/ a magnet & see if youve got "junk".

Check compression.
Do a leak down.
Hope for a valve seal.

I have seen many oil burners that had been overheated. And upon teardown, have found no damage other than piston rings that have lost nearly all their spring tension, meaning that they no longer hold proper tension against the cylinder walls. This is very likely what has happened. And this is where a slight honing and a new set of std rings can make a like new engine.

Leak down test will help diagnose such, right?

Yes, but I suppose it is possible for the compression rings to hold a leakdown test, but still have a faulty oil ring ? But combustion chamber overheating would likely ruin the top rings first, and maybe the valve seals first.

Id sure have to sweep thru the oil w/ a magnet & do an autopsy on the filter,, WHY? Heck, Man, thats just how I do things.,.

OK.....I am ready for the autopsy to begin.  On a trwo stroke this anaylysis is easy....pull the muffler and look at the exhaust side of hte piston and see if the piston is scored.  On a 4 stroke it is more involved.

How much oil is in the bike....Was it low on oil?.
Drain the oil and see what kind of metal might be in there.
Do a compression check.
Pull the head cover and look at the valve seals?
But I believe the real issues won't be known until the cylinder is pulled.

Don't forget to post pictures....so we can all learn sumptin.

652cc mosquito fogger... ouch. With any luck it just blew a valve seal and piston rings.

I can't get that lucky. Put a Barnett carbon fiber clutch in the 1500 Drifter on Tuesday. Wednesday it failed. Big time failed, like can't pull the driveway failed. With maybe 10 miles on it failed. I'd take valve seal or ring jobs over redoing a clutch any day of the week.

I don't agree with the "more cu.inches" opinion.

Here in Europe, way back in the '70s and '80s you would see Guzzi V35s, Morini 350s and BMW R45s cruising at 120-130Km/h easy peasy (that's 75/80mph) and they had the very same 32-34 HP the Savage has.

So where's the difference? The difference lies in the fact teh Savage was NOT engineered to be a high speed slabside cruiser.

If "rfbznb" needs to cruise at 80mph for 30 minutes each way, he doesn't need a "bigger" bike, he simply needs a "highway speedster".

Honda CB500 or Suzuki SV650, just to name two.

Or a Guzzi V7, that'll cruide all day at 80mph and wink when you get there !!!

Its kinda like Dr Phil says,.....your way is always the right way, but hows it workin for ya ?? Answer, its not !  Grin
