motorcycle gas can / larger gas tank.
05/25/13 at 19:29:08

The gas tank capacity on the S40 is relatively small.  Does anyone have a recommendation for a motorcycle gas can that can easily be carried?  I assume that changing the actual gas tank to a larger tank would be more effort than just a simple bolt on job.

Thanks,
Ron G

I remember my old CT110 had an auxiliary gas can (about a half gallon, iirc) that strapped onto the side of the luggage rack... you could look for one of those.  Or strap on a Scepter MFC in lieu of a saddle bag, that would fill the S40 tank three times.  Wink

In my limited experience, it seems to me that almost all motorcycles have a combination of fuel tank size and fuel mileage that results in a fuel range between 100 and 150 miles to reserve (or "low fuel" light). Bigger bikes have bigger tanks, but get worse mileage than smaller bikes. With that in mind, the Savage/S40 is right in the middle, with a usual range of about 120 miles to reserve.

I am thinking about one of these:

I will probably think about it a lot harder the first time I run out of gas. Grin

Something else to worry about - if the spare gas in the extra container isn't used, it can go bad too. Some people make a point at every fill-up of pouring the spare fuel into the tank and refilling the spare. Probably more reasonable would be pouring the spare fuel into the tank after the trip is over, or using it in your mower.

Here's that yellow bike...

I think it's a HD NightTrain tank and then a Tour Tank on the back

I don't know. I am reminded of the Ford Pinto during a rear end collision with these aux tanks and spare cans in the saddle bags.

That's pretty clever!! Easy enough to get the fuel lines to connect, I imagine.

Well,, more gas cans = more chances to have a problem,,
Personally, stopping for gas just sint that big of a deal for me., If I was on a trip, I would probably haul a coupla small containers. There are some Stainless, 16 Oz drink containers Id use. The cap screws IN, not on.

At this point in my life.....the tank empties at about the same rate my bladder fills.  Riding 100 miles before stopping works out fine for both the bike and me.

I do realize that there are some who ride in areas that don't always have a gas station at 100 mile intervals, and some extra fuel would be a good idea.  If you have a rack there is a flat fuel container that holds 1.5 gallons and can be mounted flat on a rack.....or they have a mount that will hold it vertcial.
