Rear Wheel Options after chain conversion..
05/25/13 at 08:58:47
Hello,
I'm considering a chain drive conversion and wonder if the chain drive would allow enough clearance to lace a larger wheel on the back hub without having to modify the swing arm.
Anyone have any thoughts/experiences?
thanks

Well,, Id Guess ther'll be a bit more room there. depending on how far off the case the sprockets hold the chain. Its not as if the chain will be located where the outside of the belt IS & the difference between belt & chain widths is suddenly available for a wheel to run in there. Id suggest you make the swap to chain & see what you have.

I have a chain drive conversion on my bike and the rear tire (140/90 - 15) sidewall to chain clearance is 1/2". I have a 17 tooth front and 43 tooth rear sprockets. There are some clearance issues....the beltguard mount on the swingarm near the pivot shaft and the beltguard mount in the middle of the swingarm need to be bent out of the way to clear the chain.

If anyone is interested I have two chain drive kits for sale. Sprockets are a 17 front and 43 rear with a Heavy Duty 530 chain (7600 PSI tensile strength) and includes the necessary front sprocket spacer. The chain is cut to the proper length for a stock swingarm. The OEM pulley ratio is 2.96 and the Chain Drive Conversion ratio is 2.53. This lowers your top gear RPM by 580.

It was a costly exercise due to location. But realitively easy to install.
There are a couple of little tricks like off setting rim 4mm and spacing the sprockets out.
I have done nearly 5000km now and its great.
Great to ride.

The kits I make don't need a rear sprocket spacer...just one for the front sprocket so the front and rear sprockets align correctly.

You can make the chain conversion kit for roughly $80, you only need a 110 link chain.

I don't known where you are getting the parts for the chain drive conversion or what the quality is but $80.00 is less than my wholesale cost for the parts In use in my kits

With the rear sprocket mounted flush to the rear wheel hub the side clearance between the tire sidewall and the 530 chain is 1/2". that could be increased by the use of a spacer.
