Help Engine problems
05/24/13 at 22:13:06

I have a 96 650 with almost 8000 miles on it. Trying to sell it someone took it out for a ride and brought it back running like nuts idled fine but no power and really no acceleration barley could get it up to 55 to get it back home. I need help figuring out what happened so I can get the motor fixed myself. Starts up fine but you can see right by the exhaust shield that it smokes when you try to rev it but it does not rev very much at all like it used to what could be the problem?

Not likely an engine problem,... more likely, fuel...

Check yer' petcock...
Do this test,.. do it complete...
http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1251932429

...if it ain't yer' petcock (do that test!)...
...it's likely a sticky slide... (for that, you need to clean the carb... you might as well pull it... clean that slide, and spray all the passages and jets...
Clean everything you can in the carb while you have it off... so you don't have to do it twice...

Best luck,
Serow

I don't believe any one on here has ever had a blown head gasket. Its not a common problem with the savage.

Being that it's only got the one cylinder,... I think it would be not running,.. or very just barely...  near zero compression...
... and you could probably push it easily while in gear... Huh...

If I had only kept count of all the

"Ohh help me, I have a blown head gasket"
Threads.. & I think maybe one, Im not sure but I think I saw one in the last few months. But Ive seen probably 60 threads by people who thot theirs was blown.,
IF it will run, at all, try to get it tuned up & running better. If it leaks oil, look at the head plug, after its running decent,

Ok so seems like its not a fuel issue but seems like it smokes a lot out the exhaust where it goes into the muffler? What could be causing the power loss. Bad Exhaust?

white smoke comes from where the little heat deflector is and sometimes get black smoke out the end of the exhaust

Did you view the rider the entire time? Hate to be soo suspicious but wierder things have happened. Is it possible the guy did something stupid or used your bike as a bike parts store?

Heck, man, probably wont do hoot, but you could drain the gas & the carb bowl,, doesnt cost anything if nothing changes, use it in the mower,,

So went through and checked the petcock and everything seems like it flows good as well as no issues with the carb. After putting it back together I tried to start it full choke and all I got was a really loud bang and it seemed like something shot out from where the muffler attaches under the shield but could just be rust not for sure.

Black smoke is always too much fuel...  the white smoke must be something under the shield (oil?) burning off... otherwise it would be the same color as the smoke out the tailpipe...
If you had a head gasket problem,.. the smoke would be billowy blue/white... and stinky... Tongue...

Where are you at?... maybe someone close by could take a look...
We seem to be chasing out tails here...

Make sure the exhaust is clear. If it cant exhale, it cant run for hoot.
