The repair manual says when doing a rebuild to NOT to let the RPM drop below 2,000 RPM for the first 15 minutes. This is ensure proper oiling of the top-end. Do NOT run the engine sitting still for 15 minutes...DRIVE IT! After running at 2,000 or more for 15 minutes drive it SANELY....DON'T over rev a freshly rebuilt top-end over 4,000 rpm until has been run in for at least 500 miles. The Savage top-end oiling system is not the best...this is also why they recommend an idle speed of not less than 1,000 RPM or top-end damage from oil starvation can occur. Make sure when re-installing the cylinder head to fill that little valley in the cylinder head beneath the camshaft with fresh oil...failure to do this will result in cam bearing / camshaft damage even if you put assembly lube on the parts - I recommend following this regimen when rebuilding these engines: Run at 2,000-2,500 RPM for the required 15 minutes, for the first 200 miles: 1,000-3,000 rpm (Change the oil & filter at 200 miles) >>>> 200-500 miles: 1,000-4,000 rpm (Change the oil & filter AGAIN at 500 miles) >>> > 500-1,000 miles: 1,000-5,000 rpm (Change the oil & filter AGAIN at 1,000 miles) >>>> 1,000-2,000 miles, 1,000-6,000 rpm (Change the oil & filter AGAIN at 2,000 miles)>>>> 2,000 miles plus, 6,500 rpm limit (Change the oil & filter every 2,500 to 3,000 miles) - & have fun
