Vary the rpm's and load for a whille - don't stay at a steady speed or thottle for extended periods.  I don't use full throttle for a few tanks of fuel - but I do shut the throttle off completely and do some coasting to put a large vacuum on the cylinder at times.

Good I will do that.
My mechanic wants me to change the oil after 1000 km?
He also recommended first start let bike run for 10 min then turn off and let engine go cold.

+1  you also might want to keep it under 45/50 Mph for the first 100 miles or so   Wink

& then ya watch NHRA & they throw pistons & rings in one & roll it to the line for 3.4 second run,,,

How the heck can a motor even DO that?

I am not so sure I would let it idle that long in one spot.  I would be more apt to let it warm up enough to ride....then just ride it around the block and then shut it off.  On my first ride I think I rode for about half an hour at low throttle settings before I stopped.

And yep......change the oil early and often.  On a new engine I change at 200, 400 and 1,000 miles.  Overkill for sure....but it makes me feel better!

I also have a friend that drag races and puts his engines together, and runs them hard right away.  He changes oil after every night of racing, and his engines come apart every winter to be freshened up.  When you thnk about it, 1/4 mile at a time......I bet he doesn't have 100 miles on the engine between rebuilds!

You are right and first start I ran it about 5 min then shut it down. Went to bed.
Early morning now waiting for sun to come up and hoping for fine weather.

The repair manual says when doing a rebuild to NOT to let the RPM drop below 2,000 RPM for the first 15 minutes. This is ensure proper oiling of the top-end. Do NOT run the engine sitting still for 15 minutes...DRIVE IT! After running at 2,000 or more for 15 minutes drive it SANELY....DON'T over rev a freshly rebuilt top-end over 4,000 rpm until has been run in for at least 500 miles. The Savage top-end oiling system is not the best...this is also why they recommend an idle speed of not less than 1,000 RPM or top-end damage from oil starvation can occur. Make sure when re-installing the cylinder head to fill that little valley in the cylinder head beneath the camshaft with fresh oil...failure to do this will result in cam bearing / camshaft damage even if you put assembly lube on the parts  - I recommend following this regimen when rebuilding these engines: Run at 2,000-2,500 RPM for the required 15 minutes, for the first 200 miles: 1,000-3,000 rpm (Change the oil & filter at 200 miles) >>>> 200-500 miles: 1,000-4,000 rpm (Change the oil & filter AGAIN at 500 miles) >>> > 500-1,000 miles: 1,000-5,000 rpm (Change the oil & filter AGAIN at 1,000 miles) >>>> 1,000-2,000 miles, 1,000-6,000 rpm (Change the oil & filter AGAIN at 2,000 miles)>>>> 2,000 miles plus, 6,500 rpm limit (Change the oil & filter every 2,500 to 3,000 miles) - & have fun  Tongue

I put a .020 over piston in my jug and it was consuming a ton of fuel. It ran out on the highway and when it started it was just billowing oily smoke.
I can only assume I washed down the cylinder walls but it looked like lack of oiling.
I recently bought another jug and another .020 over piston to try this again.

The short of this is that if I had to offer any advice I'd say don't run out of a fuel for a while.

Well, I know how I would break in a brand new s-40, I'd just ride it normally, but not aggressively. I break in new cars the same way.

Never ever went wrong w/ that method.

In reality, this day and age, breaking in new engines, motorcycles/cars etc is a thing of the past. If you ask, you are told to drive normally.

Handbook states 4000rpm max up to 800 km 5000 rpm up to 1600 km, over 1600 km open it out. UP TO 4000 RPM 35 KMPH 1ST, 50 kmph second, 75 kmph 3rd, 90 kmph fourth and 95 kmph fifth. I agree with those who want constant rpm variations

Note that he recommends changing oil after the first 20 miles.

I recently followed this method, (on the street) after doing a top end on my wife's LS650 and am happy with the results so far.
