Options for my backpack??
05/15/13 at 13:33:15

I am looking for some options to carry my backpack.  My wife and I like to do long camping /backpacking trips.  We did 40 miles in the Grand Canyon last year.  We both have Suzuki Savage bikes and are looking into adding a sissy bar that we can strap the large backpack to.  The current sissy bar and back rest are not tall enough.

I was looking at this on E-bay.  Anyone have any other ideas for me?

It should fit any of them that came with fender rails and factory short bar. So if your 99 came with that mess attached... I know my 98 had the exact same fender parts as a 99...

A while back I faced the same dilemma. What I did was I had a friend weld me up a three sided, squared off "U" shaped thing (size to be decided by your needs) from 1" square tube that I then U-bolted to my existing little stock back rest.

I have a T-Bag with the extra little stuff bag that straps to the top, but it should be the same basic deal for your backpacks. I also carried a tent, backpack, tons of c-rap and had some bags on the side for even more c-rap. I did a couple round trips to Miami, FL from southern MN loaded that way with no problems at all, other than monkey butt issues. You can take a look near the bottom of the pictures page to see what a workhorse the Sav can be.

Hi Jack650 / JazzCarter, I love the big tank you have on your yellow Savage.
I assume it is off a Harley - I have sourced a similar one, with the two filler caps.

Could you please explain what mods you did in order to make it fit the Savage frame ?

I just built one out of some 3/4" square tubing from Lowe's and some thin metal sheeting I cut some "L" shaped braces and riveted them together. I drilled thru the short sissy (which is solid 3/4" aluminum) and bolted the extension on, it can be removed whenever you like.
In the pics I had the bottom zip tied to hold it still, i've since drilled another set of holes.
Cost was about $15 dollars (I already had the riveter and rivets).

It worked Jes' Fine on my 2700 mile tour in '07.  Still have the bracket.  Would be silly to ship the suitcase, but just the bracket should be under $20 to ship.

WAIT DOES THIS HAVE A SPOT FOR THE BLINKERS TO MOUNT OR WILL I NEED TO DO A MODIFIED MOUNT.

I just realized the Sissy Bar from Ebay that I posted pictures of does not have the blinkers attatched.  I am thinking that might be an issue.
