get a rescue from your local shelter..
humans aren't pure bred why should our pets be

We have two State colleges who neuter and spey for practice on Shelter Dogs. I ain't paying for a dog. However, shelters sometimes have free dogs at certain times. I got a free dog and sent the shelter about $20 worth of leashes ordered online. I have had a dog or two since I was five. I am now 60 and just lost my old male. I got the shelter dog about a year ago so he could train her on what to bark at and leaving the cats alone. Purebred dogs, in my opinion have more troubles and are less hardy than mixed breeds. We are casual about our animals. They belong outside with plenty of food and water, flea protection, and warm houses in the winter. If you don't intend to take care of them, don't get one. The kids rarely will. I still lay down in the yard when I'm tired and get "mauled" by dogs and cats alike.

If "Inside for long periods" is part of the job description, Jack Russell isnt the dog,Thats a given,,
Actually, skip that "IF" -- Jack Russells are not the job, period.  They are horrid beasts.  All they care about is killing vermin, playing tug-o-war, and eating.  They managed to get under the house, in the crawl space, chasing God know what, AT 3 AM barking underneath our floors.

+1 to JOG, my parents have a long haired Jack Russell and the only thing that wears it out to the point of needing a rest is my 3 1/2 year old son LOL   Grin

I just got an English Mastiff, a hunk a,hunk of burning love. She's not hyper but she's huge. She's the most loving animal I've ever had and gets along great with my grandson. There's a Mastiff Recue Association and I adopted her through them. Cost me $350 but they normally sell for $1000. I believe shes gonna be the best dog I've ever had.

I am 55 yrs old and have never been without
a dog or dogs.
I have owned pure breeds,as well as non
pure bred. I have had  small, med and large
dogs.
A few of my dogs along the way came to me
already raised and some as pups.
I do believe it is in how you train them. Our Rottie
we put thru some puppy training with a trainer and
that helped us as he got larger and older.
He is one smart dog I will contest to that.
He gets along well with our mini Dahshund.
Take your time when choosing one and you may
find out, it may choose you instead.
When I picked out the Rottie, I had a female at first.
I spent over an hr and something just didn't click.
I placed her back and choose the male.
He has brought alot of joy to our family.
Some think that Rottie are mean, well they can be, as
well as any other breeds.
Again I do believe it is how their trained.
I couldn't ask for a better dog than my Rottie..
I wish you luck in your quest and look forward to hearing
about your new addition to your family as well as pics.. Smiley kim

Avoid beagles like they had the plague. We have a couple of them, one mainly inside (mine) and one mostly outside (father in law's). Too smart for their own good, can scale fences with ease, noisy, hard to train...

Stay away from hunting breeds unless you hunt. Stay away from stock handling breeds if you aren't on a working farm.

While ya'll were thinking about getting a dog..I got one! Barely weaned, black with some tan, round as a ball with big feet. And free! Wife and daughter are mad, because they got it from a box full of pups at Wal Mart parking lot--but any animal they get always prefers me to them. Actually they are mad because I rib them about it.  Grin
