Yes but typically you wind up with some pitting unless you catch it just as it started to build up.   Embarrassed

Just being close enough to the ocean can do that from the salt air, usually happens when the protective clear coat is missing or even worn down to minimal. I grew up in a sea side community and had it happen to bikes and cars.   Sad

Bummer! The crankcase as well. Can that stuff be removed? Huh

This engine is definitely a candidate for a painted crankcase and side covers, or a Rat Bike look where looks are not important.  When corrosion goes that deep - I don't believe you will ever get it to buffed to shiny again.  The corrosion makes little black pits and veins that goes really deep.

Hi there, i would be very supprised if it was the loom, it seems to be something that changes when it gets hot , well the loom doesnt, i would check the coil, the little resistor IN the spark plug cap,the HT cable,(it gets hot because its near the head) (spark plug, of course you've done that) the controller, it may look ok but there are components that get warm in there, if the clutch and side stand have been bypassed, how? if not done right they will keep a relay on which cout fail when it gets warm.
just a few things to try

Yup, I agree. Good ideas on things to check. The reason I would replace the wiring harness though is because it is such a mess it would be difficult to troubleshoot being so disorganized. 86-88 and 95 models all use the same wiring harness. (and ignition controller) If Wayne could find one in decent condition with all the connectors intact, it sure would make this less complicated IMHO.  Smiley

'86 has a different wiring diagrahm and there's a couple of things different than other years.

I don't doubt there are differences Verslagen, but, the harness is the same.  http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/suzuki/SP-36610-24B20.html
